This 30 minute class is learner guided/directed and designed specifically to bring out the creativity hidden inside you. Each week every learner gets the chance to write a creative piece and share it with the teachers, if they choose to; this class also suits a solo learner. There will be opportunities to produce a poem/freestyle at the end of class. The last 10-15 minutes of class will be The Freestyle Poetry Slam! You will be encourage to develop your poem and taught how to perform it for a Poetry Slam in your area. You will leave the class feeling happy and proud that you have made up your own creative piece to perform to friends and family! This is what AI said about our first 2 lessons: Lesson 1 In this meeting, we covered the basics of meter, rhythm, and poetry devices like metaphor and simile as they apply to rap and freestyle. We led a fun word game where participants quickly brainstormed related words, then challenged them to freestyle short rhymes using those words. We emphasized the importance of confidence, explaining that the key to freestyle is having a solid rhythmic framework and not worrying about perfection. We also discussed ways to build vocabulary and transition smoothly between rhyme schemes. We provided feedback on the participants' initial freestyle attempts, offering constructive suggestions for improvement. We ended by highlighting next week's focus on metaphor and simile, and asked the participant to come prepared with a list of their favorite rappers to discuss further. Lesson 2 In today's class, we focused on exploring the use of metaphors and similes, two important literary devices in poetry and rap. We watched a video that provided an overview of these concepts, discussing how they can be used to vividly convey big ideas or emotions in a concise way. We then practiced identifying metaphors and similes, and the students generated their own examples connected to the words we uncovered in a matching game. This led to a creative writing exercise where they composed rhyming couplets using those words as a starting point. The students demonstrated strong skills in bridging the words into cohesive narratives, showcasing their ability to think creatively and apply the literary techniques we covered. We also had a lively discussion about the role of memory and vocabulary in freestyle rapping, and how these foundational skills support more advanced performance abilities.

Analysing and understanding Literature and Poetry is a very effective start to developing the skills needed to enhance your overall understanding and critical thinking abilities. I have been working as an actress and educator since 2012, and since 2015 I have devoted myself to the study and practice of Butoh dance and physical theatre. My journey in this field began at LUME Teatro, a renowned theatre group with over 40 years of history, where I studied and practised the methodology developed by Luís Otávio Burnier. In 2015, Butoh entered my life and profoundly transformed my understanding of art and existence. Through the work of Kazuo Ohno and Tatsumi Hijikata, I encountered the depth and expressive power of Butoh not only as an artistic language, but also as a way of life. Over time, what began as research has become a guiding philosophy, shaping how I perceive movement, presence, expression, and the human experience. Butoh is a Japanese dance form that emerged in the 1950s. It is a practice that works from the inside out, functioning as an active meditation and a process of self-knowledge. In Butoh, the body becomes an instrument of poetry, subjectivity, and transformation, inviting a deep immersion into one’s inner landscape. Within Butoh, there is the concept of ma, the space in between, referring to invisible and empty spaces where matter cannot be seen, yet which are filled with life and presence. This understanding resonates with aspects of Buddhist philosophy, offering a sensitive invitation to experience oneself, the surrounding space, nature, and life with greater awareness and openness.

These interactive, informal, and supportive online classes are aimed at students of any age (above 7 years) who wish to write poetry, short stories, or creative prose (such as life writing). This includes beginners who are keen to learn basic writing skills, and those with some experience wishing to develop their practice and learn more, including students of English and creative writing at school, college or outside of formal education. Although we will touch on key grammatical terms, the focus will be on your creative expression through the written word. In these classes, which will be tailored according to age, experience, needs, and areas of interest, students will learn the basics of writing short stories, including flash fiction; poetry, including free verse and traditional forms such as Haiku and sonnets; and creative prose, including life writing or short creative essays. You can attend as many classes as you like, and together, we will build your skills and understanding of creative writing, including identifying the stories you want to tell. The classes will be a mix of presentation, 'warm-up' writing activities, discussion, reading and analysing key texts, main writing activities, and redrafting, editing and proof-reading your work. For those wishing to get published, there will be additional optional support available, such as detailed editing and mentoring advice, as well as hints and tips on developing as a writer.
