Learning how to play an instrument can fall into many classroom stereotypes; Not if you strive to discover sounds and styles, if you're open to learning not only an instrument but all that is related to music and sound making! I've taught at different institutes and private lessons for +5 years; then slowly began to put together my own method of teaching not only piano, but related subjects to help students gain a broader knowledge and be able to take next steps in their music journey even when they're finished with their music lessons.With all the experience I gathered in working with children and adults, I've composed a method of teaching subjects related to piano performance(music theory, music history, improvisation and creative music composing) alongside lessons on the instrument and piano techniques, as the student proceeds and is in need of more broad knowledge. Bandoneon is a very well know instrument for playing tango, in fact it's part of the genre's DNA. However, not many people know that the instrument was constructed in Germany and some people even say it was supposed to be used as an portable organ. This means that the Bandoneon has a technique that is independent of any genre. This technique is not found by coping other instruments such as the organ or keyboard but through the development of the nature of the instrument. This is mainly the importance of the air and how it is affected by the pulling and the movement we make when we play. Of course Tango will be an important axis of the lessons as it very important for the development of the instrument and for specific techniques but Tango won't be the starting point as it's not the best pedagogical tool for learning the instrument. But no worries, we'll get there ;) Have you ever wondered how a Gregorian chant, Bach, Mozart & Chopin might sound in the bandoneon? The results might surprise as you would get a very different sound from the one you are originally used to. Also, we can try and use the bandoneon for different and new genres, who knows what we might discover from the instrument along the way?

About Laurie Born and raised in the colourful and vibrant seaside city of Brighton (UK), Laurie began playing the trumpet aged 7 and grew up playing in the local Brighton and London music scene. He studied classical music at Royal Holloway University of London where he graduated with honours and won the Dame Felicity Lott award for performance in 2014. Since then he has resided in the Netherlands playing and studying with many musicians from the Dutch and European jazz scene. In 2016 he graduated from Codarts Conservatory Cum Laude having studied formally under the Dutch jazz-master Jarmo Hoogendijk amongst others. In 2018 he graduated with a master’s degree from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam receiving the highest mark ever to be given by the department. As a band-leader his quartet received 3rd place at the Leiden Jazz Competition in 2016 and in the same year made an appearance at North Sea Jazz Festival. In 2018, his quintet was selected as finalists of both the Keep-an-Eye Jazz Awards and the prestigious Dutch Jazz Competition. To date he has made numerous appearances at jazz venues and festivals in and around the Netherlands and currently resides in The Hague (NL) teaching students, giving performances and making music with friends.
