During the first few lessons I will make sure you have the tools to pronounce and identify all the sounds of the Italian language. This step is essential! And it will make everything easier afterwards. When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. We will use real songs, real literature, do real conversation and storytelling. When you are engaging all your senses it is easier to keep your mind relaxed and to remember new words. I will customize my materials to your interests, needs and desired pace. And because you are learning from a native Italian you will also learn about Italian culture and history. You will absorb a way of thinking, not just grammar rules. I speak a bunch of languages so I know a thing or two about how tedious language classes can be. My terrifying French teacher in middle school made us repeat the same fake dialogue from a really bad book ad nauseam, over and over and over again. Some of those dialogues are carved in my brain: “Bonjour, je m’appelle Richard Drapeau, je viens du Canada, je suis Canadien...” When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. I hold a degree in Lingue e Letterature Straniere (Foreign Languages and Literatures) from Università Roma Tre (equivalent to an American MA) and a Master’s of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media from Columbia College Chicago. I wrote a thesis about translating a long epic poem by W. H. Auden and I tried to ride a horse across America.

I’ve got two passions in life: music and cultures and they both relate to languages. Music is known to be a universal language and different cultures connect with, and influence each other, through the use of spoken language. My formal education lays in music, holding a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, and a five-year diploma as a Jazz bass player from the Civica Scuola di Musica Claudio Abbado in Milan. I’ve been teaching music for fifteen years and during the last one I've decided to expand over to languages, by taking up the challenge to combine my passion for teaching with the love for languages. I’ve developed the latter during my many years abroad, where I shared my everyday life with people from all over te world. My method is essentially based on grammar and conversation, alternating the two based on the student’s level of fluency. Once the basics are mastered I focus on conversation, especially providing thorough explanation about typical words and expressions and their various acceptations within different contexts. At times I may also add the odd etymology side note when relevant. I also like to use readings upon subjects that are of the student’s interest, as this aids in nurturing their motivation. Given the transformative and fluid nature of speech, my aim is to deliver an organic learning experience, able to be put to fruition from the start and in everyday life, but that also won’t fail to address the differences between formal and informal interactions. Hence, avoiding inhibit a swift communication in favour of grammatical accuracy. A second level of my teaching focuses on expanding the student's writing skills and this is aimed to individuals who may have achieved a solid grasp of the basis and a wider knowledge on vocabulary. This is because writing is an art on its own and its objective is to convey one's true thoughts and feelings, therefore it requires a dedicated effort. I started classes with Madeira in preparation for an interview to a French Medical School. While I had a fairly okay level of French already, Madeira really helped me polish my language skills and achieve the level of refinement and ease in my formal conversational skills which I needed for my interview. She was able to expertly identify what areas I needed to improve upon, and through her exercises and feedback I was able to greatly improve my oral skills. Madeira was also incredibly receptive to any requests that I had regarding things which I wanted to work on, and she went above and beyond in helping me understand technical portions of French grammar with which I have always had issues. Overall, I strongly recommend Madeira as a French teacher to anyone attempting to improve on their French skills.

I’m very grateful to have Andrea as my Italian language tutor. I am traveling to Italy soon, and his lessons have given me the confidence I need to converse in Italian when I’m there. He pays close attention to pronunciation and grammar, politely correcting you when you make mistakes and clearly teaching you the grammar rules needed to avoid making them again. The typed notes he makes during the lesson (which he sends you afterward) are clear, very helpful summaries of what we covered. I don’t think I could ask for a better tutor!

Naomi is an outstanding language teacher, highly skilled in teaching which comes from her advanced degree in language studies. She develops a plan based on the needs of the student - in my case, as a beginner she worked out a model that helped me grasp the basics of the structure of the language as well as cultivate the fundamentals of common everyday speech, I would recommend her for anyone wanting to develop their skills in Italian and or Spanish from a beginner to a more advanced stage.
