This course will explore the history and origins of Creole communities around the world. Students will analyze these communities through the lens of identity, music, and food to better understand the unique blend of African, European, Indigenous, and sometimes Asian cultures, that formed a novel, “creole” society. While special focus will be given to French Creole communities, students will also become acquainted with a broader definition of Creole that can be applied to Hispanic, Anglophone Caribbean, and Dutch Caribbean territories.
