I am a singer-songwriter, instrumentalist, graduate of Berklee College of Music (BM), and a lifetime student of traditional music. I have been teaching music for 6 years, and I am passionate about fostering a love for music in my students instead of simply teaching by rote. A lot of teachers focus excessively on the instrument being taught, instead of focusing on the music. An instrument is a tool for expressing music, and while a good technique is important, the real goal is learning how to apply the technique to express yourself. I tailor to my students’ individual tastes, using the music they love to teach them how to use the instrument. At Berklee, I gained a strong knowledge of jazz harmony and was introduced to many music styles from around the world. I can teach Bluegrass, New Acoustic Music, Celtic Music, Folk Songs, Jazz, Jazz Manouche, Blues, Pop, and Rock. In addition, I can use my songwriting expertise to help critique and develop your original music.

Time for creation: In this course / workshop we will practice and learn, see the purely textual part of writing a song or poem, and study our own writing style. We will also see different approaches to provoke inspiration when it is not there.

A great experience interpreting your vocal sound and range towards a melody line. This class will cause you to have stars in your eyes. There will be a sense of mysticism whilst maintaining a level headed sound. We will get you out of your shell and have you singing to the heavens and back. With vocal ranges varying in genre you will gain an understanding of how to develop your art and master this. We will get you out of your comfort zone and accelerating at a steady pace.

This class is for anyone interested in writing their own songs. The core of it will be week-by-week feedback sessions for a new song you are working on. I will be encouraging you to write a new song every week - this can be a finished song or just a snippet of an idea. Writing one song a week will not only motivate you to write more material, but it will also allow you to practise the craft of songwriting regularly and with many different types of songs and ideas. The feedback sessions will be very relaxed, discussing the positive aspects of your song, as well as looking at the things to improve on in order to take it to the next level. One of the most important things to me, is to tailor my class specifically to your needs and interests. For example, if you want to write pop songs, then we'll focus in that area particularly. Or if you want to write songs based on the guitar, piano etc, then again, we'll focus on this particularly. The main thing is that the class suits you. Also, in order to inspire you and supplement your songwriting skills, we will be studying lyrics from many different types of songs, taking a close look at what the lyric means and what makes it effective. This additional aspect of the class will help you develop a sharper understanding of lyric writing which you can then apply to your own songs.

I trained as both a contemporary and classical singer and have performed in both fields for many years, from the Albert Hall to Abbey Road. I am a secondary school teacher, teaching 11-19 yo music and music technology, so am totally up to date on what is required for exams and the latest developments in popular music and current song trends in most styles.

You will learn how to play guitar the basics of music theory and how to apply it in songwriting. I will guide you to understand different music genres and how to capture their sound signature, helping you to develop your own sound and style. Together we will explore different types of music production techniques and how to implement them in your writing process. Gradually I will introduce different approaches to writing music and develop your musical and compositional skills to become a fully efficient songwriter and music producer.

With a background as a session pianist and singer, a Masters degree from Goldsmith’s University, London, Jacob crested his own musical film (writing and producing ten songs for the award-winning project), Jacob was offered the opportunity to fly to LA and record his first album with Walter Afanasieff (Mariah Carey‘s co-writer and producer of Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On). Making your own song seems like a piece of cake but once you get into it its a lot harder than most people would imagine. However this course breaks down all the steps from starting to write a song all the way down to having a finished radio worthy song. I break this process down into three main things. Writing, recording and then mixing. Each of these three catagories I explain in great depth and once you finish this course you will have the knowledge needed in all of these areas for you to begin your music career.

Song writing is a unique learning experience it promotes the inner passion of music and art combines the best way of expressing oneself to a top quality emotional and spiritual character, by learning how to compose ones inner voice to its top quality expectations.

This is a great course for singers or songwriters/producers who would like to use a keyboard or piano to aid them in their songwriting or performing. Having some basic knowledge of keyboard playing will allow you to record demos of songs, accompany yourself whilst singing and help you write more structured, interesting songs. We will look at basic technique, how to form chords and play them and how to use chord patterns to write songs. I can also help you add accompaniments to existing songs you've written.
