About Me
Born and raised on the island of Malta, Carlo began his musical education at the age of eight. After a few years of learning the violin, he picked up the saxophone and started to discover a love for jazz music. He describes his musical journey as a process that is ceaseless, expressive, and allows for freedom of interpretation. He is known for his fresh take on the genre and his unabashed use of improvisation, making the tunes of his compositions markedly his own.
During the early years of his career, he made a name for himself through local performances around the island and then slowly began collaborating with renowned local and international musicians.
In 2013, he moved to Paris (France) to further his studies. This relocation gave him the opportunity to explore the scene and learn from other musicians, both by listening to and collaborating with them. The Parisian scene led to the recording of his first album, The Sound Catalogues, which stemmed from an earlier collaborative project at the 2012 Malta Jazz Festival.
Upon returning to Malta in 2015, he continued working on new music to record whilst developing the initial concept for the Jazz School. In February 2019, he co-founded the live music venue Storeroom, putting together various concerts and events that received an immediate response from a mixed local and foreign audience.
Having expanded his network of connections, Carlo has been able to perform in a variety of cities such as Milan, Istanbul, Berlin, Kyiv, and more. He now has four albums under his name as a leader; his latest release, Wool, was recorded in Kyiv (Ukraine) together with musicians from the same city. He has also recorded on another fours albums as a sideman.
