Enthusiastic Music, Piano Violin and Viola teacher

Enthusiastic Music, Piano Violin and Viola teacher

Hi! I’m Paloma, I’m a film and videogame music composer, pianist and violist. I give classes in music language, music theory, harmony, and composition from classical to film, piano, and viola. My students are any age, any level from beginner to advanced. I will help with exams, GCSE, and A-Levels, as well as help students obtain their grade 5 theory to advance and take higher grades in composition or viola. I started teaching when I was 17 years old. While I was studying viola and composition I would help colleagues learn Harmonic Theory for University exams or just for fun. Whilst studying, in order to support my learning abroad, I started teaching children and teenagers. The classes included a wide variety, from; supporting their studies during the school year, to their first approaches to music as well as nurturing love and excitement for playing and making music. After University I continued giving classes during the last few years. The compositional strand of training if a student wishes to undergo it has many elements we will learn the theory needed to competently make music learn systems that allow us to break down composition as well as multiple genres. work they can do by themselves at their own pace, allowing each student to work and grow at a rate suited to their ability. -Building a strong understanding of melodies and chords and how different instruments work and support each other. -If they are studying in a formal educational establishment, they will receive support and guidance in regard to their work and exams. When I am giving classes in music language, viola, piano... to children, I always try that the classes will be dynamic but at the same time incorporate a little bit of Theory. I utilised exercises that are designed to engage young developmental minds, like those you’d find on a children’s show. For example, singing, playing... songs allows us to train the ears and help them to begin to recognise the different registers, notes, rhythms and tempo. This was done alongside training on their chosen instruments, my aim was and is to nurture a language of music as well as give them practical skills and exercises they can do on their own. I play the piano and viola, so I always try to support them. When it comes to classes for teenagers I teach them theory and practice as well as strong fundamentals but I also allow time to let them lead their learning to give them more agency, allow them to learn their favourite /contemporary songs. This keeps the passion for music alive. With teenagers, my approach centres on elevating and reinforcing what they learn from school using exercises and providing tools to break down ideas musically. In addition, I also prepare for GCSE and A-levels. Lessons will follow a path of progression, teaching them how to approach the next levels of theoretical and practical competence. Allowing the students to understand their Progression and their path forward increases the likelihood they will continue studying. Lessons are flexible, and curated on a student-to-student basis as well as making sure to incorporate what I believe they need to achieve the next level. This involves; practical music training, ear training, building on theoretical knowledge, as well as learning songs they love to ensure they feel fulfilled and have fun with music.

"Fantastic teacher, fun to work with, extremely knowledgeable and able to break down concepts into easily understandable lessons. I highly recommend Vince!" - Carry W. "Vince brings a gentle discipline to his lessons as well as a nicely structured method of learning the guitar. He is very committed to his music and his enthusiasm shines through. I also appreciate his patience. The pace of your learning and skill development is up to you and is dependent on the time you are willing to invest. He is a fine musician who truly enjoys sharing his knowledge of music." - Tom N. "Vince is a caring, knowledgeable and talented musician. He is easy to work with and meets you where you are as a musician no matter what level you are at. He is also a fun guy to hang around. I highly recommend taking lessons from him." - Adam R. "Vince is a great teacher, and a good guy to talk to. I took lessons from Vince for 3 years, and in that time, I grew a lot as a musician. Whenever I had a question or problem, Vince would help me solve it, and then teach me how to do it by myself the next time. 10/10 would recommend." - Joel A.

Student at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne gives introductory courses in composition and/or harmony

Student at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne gives introductory courses in composition and/or harmony

This course is aimed at beginners, with or without mastery of music writing. It will be possible to cover: - The basics of writing music, melodic (notation of pitches and rhythms on the staff) and harmonic (notation of chords); - The basics of classical and/or jazz harmony: notations, chord compositions, chord functions, modulations, etc. - Questions of form: what structure should you give to your piece? What are the "classic" forms? How to start/finish a piece? The course will be structured between: - on the one hand, the rereading of work composed by the student, in order to suggest avenues for development; - on the other hand, the teaching of the necessary or desired tools from the list above. My profile : I have been studying for a year in the "Performer Jazz" bachelor's degree in transverse flute at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne. With 20 years of instrumental practice, I began composing on my own by discovering computer-assisted music as a teenager. I then developed a more "written" composition style (on score) over the past 6 years during my studies at the Grenoble Conservatory (France). I obtained a Diploma of Musical Studies there rewarding 5 years of harmony and writing "in styles" which allowed me to appropriate the classical, baroque, romantic styles, of Fauré and Debussy, Bartok and Bill Evans. I also took free composition classes for 5 years. My experiences include the musical setting of a feature film for a piano-flute duo, the composition of pieces for solo piano, for chamber music ensembles, for small orchestras, for jazz quartet and septet.

Music Theory and GCSE/AS/A-Level tutoring: beginners to advanced (ABRSM / jazz modes / improvising/ songwriting)

Music Theory and GCSE/AS/A-Level tutoring: beginners to advanced (ABRSM / jazz modes / improvising/ songwriting)

Hello! Music theory is a fun and awe-inspiring thing if you know how to look at it. I'm Katie, a professional multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and educator with a big desire to support my students to ignite their own passion for music. As a teacher I have 12 years' experience creatively inspiring young people and adults in 1:1 lessons, leading choirs, directing music for youth theatre companies and in a charity providing music to vulnerable teenagers. I'm a trauma informed practitioner and work directly with the amazing potential of music to translate feelings into sound. Understanding music theory is a liberating tool for doing just this - and I seek to find what lights up my students and make the learning fascinating and fun, tailored to how they learn best. As a musician I've played for 23 years, I achieved my grade 5 theory and grade 5 cello exams aged 11, I've have had my original compositions played on Jazz FM and BBC 6 Music, achieved a 1st at Durham University studying music, grade 6 piano as a teenager and grade 8 distinction in flute, as well as becoming fluent on electric bass, ukulele and voice. I'd love to support you or your child in enhancing your understanding and confidence in music theory. I am available for supporting students through theory exams, with GCSE or A-Level music, to become a better improviser, to learn how to paint soundscapes using music and compose, and how to use music as meditation for enhanced wellbeing. It'd be a pleasure to chat to you and support you on your musical journey! Please feel free to reach out :). Looking forward to hearing from you.
