Hello!
Music theory is a fun and awe-inspiring thing if you know how to look at it. I'm Katie, a professional multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and educator with a big desire to support my students to ignite their own passion for music.
As a teacher I have 12 years' experience creatively inspiring young people and adults in 1:1 lessons, leading choirs, directing music for youth theatre companies and in a charity providing music to vulnerable teenagers. I'm a trauma informed practitioner and work directly with the amazing potential of music to translate feelings into sound. Understanding music theory is a liberating tool for doing just this - and I seek to find what lights up my students and make the learning fascinating and fun, tailored to how they learn best.
As a musician I've played for 23 years, I achieved my grade 5 theory and grade 5 cello exams aged 11, I've have had my original compositions played on Jazz FM and BBC 6 Music, achieved a 1st at Durham University studying music, grade 6 piano as a teenager and grade 8 distinction in flute, as well as becoming fluent on electric bass, ukulele and voice.
I'd love to support you or your child in enhancing your understanding and confidence in music theory. I am available for supporting students through theory exams, with GCSE or A-Level music, to become a better improviser, to learn how to paint soundscapes using music and compose, and how to use music as meditation for enhanced wellbeing.
It'd be a pleasure to chat to you and support you on your musical journey! Please feel free to reach out :).
Looking forward to hearing from you.

About Me
Hello :) I'm Katie, a 29-year-old professional musician with over 12 years' experience inspiring and teaching young people and adults music.
I'm a multi-instrumentalist, singer and song-writer and have deep understandings of piano, cello, flute, ukulele, guitar, bass and composing. Genres I've worked with range from jazz, classical, flamenco, neo-soul, indie, folk, ambient and improvised. I've led award-winning choirs, written music for international directors and youth theatre companies and had my original work aired on BBC 6 Music and Jazz FM. And I love to ignite this passion in others!
Music and creativity is part of the unique joy of being human - it exists within all of us - and it is my calling to support people to find and discover this beautiful treasure of creative-expression that lies within all of us, as a means to get to know ourselves better and live a more fulfulling and enriched life.
I love to support my students with exactly what they are wanting to get out of music. Whether you are a complete beginner wanting to dip your toes into understanding how to make music for the first time, are needing some support with studies in school, college, or for an upcoming exam, or are more advanced and wanting support on flow state when improvising or writing music - I am here for you.
I've had a deep connection with music since the age of 6, and have developed this over time. I specialise in the flow state of improvising, and supporting you how to use different flavours of the scales and modes to paint the soundworlds you feel inside. Music is feeling, and I work with it at this pure level.
I am adept at helping solidify your understanding of music theory from new angles that allows you to feel confident in a fun and curious way.
I'd love to hear from you - please feel free to get in touch and we can discuss your needs :)
