Music theory is often the most neglected aspect of a student's education, whether due to the usual lack of methodology from their teachers (who themselves may not have learned it well), or because of the perceived lack of practical application during its study. Yet, for both music students and professional musicians, a solid understanding of music theory is essential: the concepts of harmony, for example, allow for improved reading of sheet music, enabling students to see multiple notes within a vertical chord as a single entity rather than a collection of notes to be read individually. I therefore offer a course in music theory, more specifically in tonal and modal harmony, for those wishing to learn more about the true understanding of music. During this course, you will learn how the notes of different scales are formed, the intervals and chords they generate, the use of three- and four-note chords, and many other harmonic tools that will help you refine your understanding, reading, and playing of music.

My name is Lyle, and I teach Trumpet, Piano, and also more general composition and music production. I specialise in contemporary styles (anything from the last 100 years), and have found many of my students typically are: - Young children, who's parents are looking for a teacher who is more interested in flexibility and helping the child become inspired and self-motivated, rather than crushed by overly academic and strict teaching. - Adults who feel like their childhood instrumental learning has left them with large gaps in their knowledge and ability, particularly when it comes to improvisation and playing music without sheet music. - Learners who are interested in developing their musicianship, and curious about, but also a bit scared by JAZZ. - Learners who are interested in recording music, and want advice on both music and professional goals and the industry. I am happy to teach grades, but have a strong teaching philosophy that focuses around more specifically tailored learning paths that focus on giving the student the tools needed to become self-sufficient playing and creating music, whether it be to relax at home, play with others, or write songs. If this sounds good, please don't hesistate to get in touch and we can discuss further! About me: I am currently completing my Level 4 Music Educator certificate from Trinity College, and have been fully teaching professionally for just over two years, since finishing my studies. As a trumpeter, I have played on European tours with various bands, played on great stages such as The Royal Festival Hall, Bath Forum, and at Glastonbury Festival. I also have my own band, LYLE!, in which I sing, play keyboards, play trumpet, and write and produce all of the music, as well as playing and performing with many different bands across the UK.

Would you like to approach the creative writing of music? Would you like to fully understand the languages and the way music works? Can I help you! Like any form of creative expression, music has its rules, rooted in perception and in the context around us. We will be able to work on fundamental concepts of musical expression, valid in all genres and also delve into the area that interests you the most (baroque, classical, pop, jazz...) My course has a non-academic approach and it is open to all: whether you are professionals who want to deepen their musical knowledge, or you are amateurs or beginners we can build the perfect course for you and that will allow you to express yourself or simply to better understand the music you are listening to. The only thing I highly recommend is knowing how to read music, because it allows us to go much faster. If you are not able, we can start there.
