As a teacher, I emphasise activity-based learning (constructivism), which enables students to take ownership of their learning and stay engaged throughout a lesson. Some active learning strategies that I use include Role-Playing (Year 7 students act in a drama that explains the IPOS cycle or how sensors work with computers), Debates (Year 10 students argue for and against the topic ‘Should the Internet Be Policed?’), use of Advance Organizers (Year 8 mix and match the python variable to the appropriate data type) etc. I use such teaching approaches because teenage students need to be fully engaged in the lesson otherwise, they can get distracted.
