I am a global trotter and have lived in China for 18 years and in the USA for 8 years, spanning across Beijing, Chicago, New York, Honolulu, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. Right now I live in Mexico City! I am bilingual in Mandarin Chinese and English. In this class, I will help you practice your language skills through topic-based discussions. Previously I have taught English in Vietnam and pinyin in Beijing.

Chinese is easy, practical and suitable for Westerners to get off to a good start on site. I am from Wavre (Belgium) and have been immersed in Chinese culture and language since 2005. After 2 years of learning the basics at the Catholic University of Louvain, I went to Taiwan for a year to learn Mandarin in immersion and deepen my knowledge of Chinese martial arts. Back in Belgium, I always remained exposed to the language. My method is therefore that of spoken drill, with introduction to characters illustrated by practical examples or points of cultural and historical interest. The basic characters must of course be studied and I give a lot of “nice to have” characters to increase cultural and practical interest without overloading the mind. --> The interest is to be drilled on the important points and to have a practical survival pack in passive knowledge which can allow rapid development in the field. My method is also well suited as a summer catch-up course and preparation for the following year.

Course Description: This course is specially catered to adults and teenagers who have zero or minimal knowledge in Mandarin/Chinese and wish to learn Mandarin/Chinese from the very beginning. Students will learn the course using mainly 3 books: (1) Mandarin Conversation Book (with learning elements in conversational role playing, grammar and Chinese culture & tradition) (2) Chinese textbook (with learning elements in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills) (3) Chinese workbook (with plenty exercises and drillings complementing for the core four skills found in the Chinese textbook). At the very beginning of the course, students will learn the Hanyu Pinyin System (Mandarin phonics & its notation system); getting to recognize and pronounce Mandarin vowels, consonants and their combinations correctly. In addition, students will also learn the four Mandarin tones accurately. Once students have mastered the Hanyu Pinyin System and the four Mandarin tones, they will venture into learning daily conversational Mandarin, Chinese vocabulary & essential grammar rules; as well as appreciating the Chinese culture and tradition, of which are found in the Mandarin Conversation Book. In order to further develop speaking & listening skills, and picking up different critical skills such as reading and writing simplified Chinese characters, students will also study the other two books at the same time: The Chinese textbook and workbook for these purposes. Indeed, these two books are arranged with the same topics sequentially; and therefore are interlinked and they complement closely with each other. On the other hand, the Mandarin Conversation Book contains themes that can also be mapped very well onto the Chinese textbook and workbook. Hi, My name is Rui, I'm currently studying in Poland, just looking for some chance to self-fund myself. My major in China is English education for childhood. I have experience teaching children English and Chinese. I've already passed Chinese Mandarin Level 2 A , I can teach Mandarin without my dialect accent. Plus, I can also speak my own dialect- Sichuan dialect which is quite similar to Mandarin. If you're already in advanced level and would like to learn some dialect, I can teach you Sichuan dialect as well. Meanwhile, I've got no chinglish accent at all and can explain Mandarin well using English and that'll be easier for us to understand each other.
