Trusted teacher: How many people in the world speak German as their mother tongue? Around 130 million people speak German as their mother tongue, or as their second language. German is the most widely spoken mother tongue in the European Union and is the official language in seven countries. There are 7.5 million people in 42 countries who are part of a German-speaking minority. How many people have already learned German as a foreign language? 289 million! It is the total number of people around the world who have learned German at some point, according to a calculation by the Germanist Ulrich Ammon. Another question is, to what extent they have done it. Currently, 15.4 million people around the world learn German as a foreign language, 90 percent are schoolchildren and the remaining 10 percent are adults. How many words are there in the German language? More than you might think. German learners soon learn that two nouns combined make up a new word. This makes it difficult to count the total number. In 2013, Berlin philologists estimated a total of 5.3 million German words. In 2017, the editors of the Duden, the standard work of German spelling, calculated that today's German has almost 23 million words (in its basic forms alone). This result is based on a gigantic digital collection of texts from a total of 40,000 fiction and non-fiction books. However, the latest edition of the Duden contains only 145,000 entries. And a normal speaker uses only 12,000 to 16,000 words. What words are the most common? „Der, die, das“: Specific articles, which all German students know so well, take first place. They are followed by "in" and "and". Which word has the most letters? In the Duden it is: "Aufmerksamkeitsdefizit-Hyperaktivitätsstörung" (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), with 44 letters. Why was the International Mother Language Day created? The UN declared February 21 the International Mother Language Day, because almost half of the 6,000 existing languages ​​around the world are in danger of extinction. German is not one of them, it is one of the ten most widely spoken languages. But in Germany there are regional languages ​​dominated by fewer and fewer people: North Frisian and East Frisian are especially threatened languages, according to the UNESCO Atlas of the World's Languages ​​in Danger. For this reason, the intellectual knowledge of the participants is developed within the scope of this course.

On the personal side, one of my greatest passions are philosophy and literature. As such, I am constantly reading and translating texts in order to increase and develop my language skills. Consequently, my work methodology is mostly focused on motivating the student to speak freely and to learn by acknowledging his/her mistakes. From the beginning, I will try to address the lessons 100% in Spanish, with the aim of familiarizing the ear to the pronunciation. In terms of written exercises, it is important to know what are the student’s learning priorities. When starting with the written part, it is important to know the student is dedicated to practicing and that he will also benefit from this in his future experiences. This is why the exercises will address current social problems that allow him to be fluent when he meets other Spanish speakers. In order for the student to learn as easily and efficiently as possible, homework exercises will be given after each lesson, drafted according to the parts that the students wishes to master best (speaking, reading, listening, writing). This way, the student will benefit from a fluid learning process and, with dedication, will be able to excel in Spanish in a short period of time.

Saniah is really fantastic - my son (14.5 yrs) and I enrolled for '1-1' classes with her, mainly to improve our conversational fluency/ease (our main focus right now), and from even the first few minutes we immediately were at ease, feeling relaxed and open in trying and warming up our German. Saniah kept us challenged, yet not at a frustrating level, and thus very engaged, and was patient in correcting us and helping us to explore the interesting conversations that came up over the two hours of the lesson. Saniah is a very well informed and thoughtful person, with an international and well-travelled background, and we managed to cover a lot of ground exploring interesting and current topics; she also gave us great German book/movie recommendations, plus followed up with adding extra vocab lists and assignments if we wished. We have had only one lesson so far, but are very much looking forward to the next one - certainly exceeded expectations and very happy with the outcome.
