I introduce exam-style questions to make his knowledge of the subject applicable to the exam he has to take. Understanding the questions likely to be asked on the exam helps make it less stressful and allows you to spend more time checking the answers. I also favor knowledge and understanding rather than rote memorization. Although rote memorization can be useful for some exams, it is of no use for applied questions and anything that may come after exams.
