This course is for viola and violin students from the beginner through the high school level, and any age from 5-99! My goal is for my students to foster a healthy and long-term relationship with their instrument. The course focuses on practicing and truly understanding technique, with an emphasis on listening. Weekly assignments tend to include technical exercises, scales, and classical pieces of the student's choice. Basic improvisation is also an interest of mine and, I find, a valuable experience for my string students.

I believe repertoire is largely a matter of student taste. Students of mine have learned pieces in the Suzuki books and other classical repertoire volumes, but have also learned pop and fiddle songs according to their interest.

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Violin Performance from the University of Puget Sound, where I graduated in 2015 before moving to Vienna to study privately for three years. I am currently on hiatus from a Master of Viola Performance degree at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague . I have been teaching violin intermittently since 2009.

While my musical education is classical, my performance interests are much wider. I have performed jazz and pop improv, and am currently exploring how hip hop can be implemented on the viola and violin.

This class is for students wanting to perfect different aspects of their film composition technique. I am a film composer working in Hollywood under the name of PHAR.
On the tech side of thing :

- Discuss your home studio equipment, your production (Logic, Cubase, Ableton or Pro Tools), your plugins, kontakt libraries, mockup creation, custom templates, live recording, mix, mastering, export STEMS etc.

Composition :

- Serving the picture, tempo maps, beat mapping, time signatures, attention to sound design and dialogues, harmony techniques, use of modes, orchestration, film music history, arrangement, use of instruments, electronic music, synthesisers (hardware & vst, modular)

Live recording :

- Relationships with filmmakers, demoing, MIDI clean-up to export to Sibelius or Finale, STEMS to Pro Tools for live prepping, role of the composer during recording session, conducting, mix and record hybrid pieces (combining live instruments and samples).

Business

- Importance of networking, giving your price, legal/tax, writer's share, film business, expansion advice, commercial techniques, communication, IMDb credits, website creation.

Each class is designed for the student's needs.

Whether it's wanting to improve your guitar technique, learn songs to play for fun, or learn how to jam with a group of people and play on stage, or even compose songs of your own, I will teach you in a way where you will be able to have the option for all.
