Zooanthropology, or On Becoming Cultural with Non-human Animals

What if human culture is not exclusively human?
Zooanthropology, or On Becoming Cultural with Non-human Animals is an introductory 10-lesson course exploring the relationship between humans and other animals and asking a fundamental question: how much of what we call “culture” has actually emerged through our relationships with other species?
The course offers a different perspective. Rather than considering culture an exclusively human achievement, zooanthropology understands it as something that has emerged through relationships, encounters and exchanges between species. Other animals are not simply objects of human knowledge or resources for human development: they are subjects who have influenced, shaped and transformed us.
This perspective invites us to reconsider our own position in the world and to question some deeply rooted assumptions about the supposed boundary between humans and other animals. It also encourages us to decentre our perspective and to become more attentive to forms of intelligence, communication, emotion, learning and relationship that do not seem to resemble our own.
The course is transdisciplinary, drawing on anthropology, philosophy, ethology and other fields. Along the way, you will encounter concepts such as intersubjectivity, epiphany, hybridisation and epimelesis, among many others. But don't be intimidated by the terminology! No previous knowledge of anthropology, philosophy, ethology or zooanthropology is required. What the course does require is curiosity, an interest in human–nonhuman animal relations, and a willingness to question some familiar ideas and look at the world from a less anthropocentric perspective.
Slides and a bibliography will be provided.

About Me
I hold a Doctorate in Anglistics from the University of Venice and a Ph.D. in Italian Studies from the University of Birmingham. Over the years, I have researched and lectured at universities in the UK and Switzerland on a range of subjects and authors, mostly related to Italian culture. Of all the writers I have studied, Giacomo Leopardi is the poet-philosopher to whom I feel most attached. His melancholic voice has accompanied me throughout my life, offering consolation and, in a sense, invisible guidance.
It was through my study of Leopardi that I first encountered the work of Roberto Marchesini, the founder of SIUA, the School for Human-Animal Interaction, and the Centre for the Study of Posthumanist Philosophy. Roberto is also the initiator of zooanthropology, a transdisciplinary approach to the study of human relationships with other animals and of the contribution that nonhuman animals have made to human culture.
After leaving academia, I found myself returning to this intellectual path. I studied at SIUA to become a certified dog educator and began collaborating with Roberto in 2019. Two years later, I launched the International Society of Zooanthropology, where I serve as President, co-directing its journal, HumAnimUs, with Roberto Marchesini, and contributing to courses, seminars, and study days.
More information about my academic work and publications, as well as my CV, can be found on my Academia.edu profile: https://independent.academia.edu/CosettaVeronese

The type of course I teach aims at clarifying the difficulties related to the comprehension and production of philosophical texts. "How should I approach this philosophical problem or text? "In what philosophical and historical context does this issue/problem fit?" "Which texts should I read?" "How should I read them?""How should I organise the information to communicate philosophical ideas?" are some of the questions I can help you solve. I specialise in Wittgenstein later philosophy and in Ordinary Language Philosophy.

It is true that the philosopher is the friend of wisdom, but above all, he is someone who does not want to make mistakes in reasoning. Philosophizing is a way of reasoning and a way of solving problems that will never have a perfect and definitive solution. Knowing the distance between the Earth and the Moon is not a problem of philosophy, because it is enough to measure to solve it. On the other hand, knowing, for example, what justice is, is a problem of philosophy. A meter will not be able to help us know the answer. We must go about it differently, and in the courses I offer, I will teach you how.

You will learn

- text reading strategies
- case studies with the aim of learning from experts
- methodology in philosophy
- writing an essay
- writing a text commentary
- a work on the philosophers of your choice
- an overview of the history of philosophy
- the general culture necessary to be able to philosophize

I will adapt to your individual needs. Each course is tailor-made. We will analyze where your difficulties lie and together develop a course program that will make you perform as quickly as possible. The basic principle of the courses I offer is dialectics, like Plato's dialogues: reflecting together, making theoretical contributions, asking questions and seeking answers, and testing the validity of reasoning.

For the past 10 years, I have been teaching German using the philosophy methodology, having studied philosophy at the Master's level at Aix-Marseille University. It turns out that the analytical mind is very useful even outside the confines of philosophy. Today, there are even fields of activity such as management with philosophy or philotherapy. In recent years, some German students have asked me to also teach them philosophy courses, and that is why I decided to offer philosophy courses directly.

I look forward to meeting you during a first lesson.

I help you write your final year projects and dissertations effectively. I prepare you for the oral defense. I also proofread your spelling and grammar.

Having graduated with High Distinction from a Master's program in Political Science, I also hold a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy. I have successfully helped several people to design, restructure, and write their dissertations and final year projects.

I am attentive to your needs. I won't write for you, but I will ask the right questions to help you find your own answers. I will proofread your texts according to a set schedule if you wish.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, I respond quickly!

With a master's degree in philosophy and experience as a teacher, I offer personalized courses to understand major philosophical concepts and effectively prepare for the baccalaureate exams.

Students will learn to analyze a topic precisely, formulate a problem statement, develop a well-reasoned argument, and engage with authors without simply reciting their notes. We will work on essay writing, text analysis, philosophical culture, and written and oral expression.

Each session is tailored to the student's level, difficulties, and objectives. Using concrete topics, texts, and their own work, I help them acquire a solid methodology, develop their critical thinking skills, and formulate their own thoughts with clarity and rigor.

The courses are aimed at high school students preparing for the baccalaureate, students following the HLP teaching as well as adults wishing to discover or deepen their knowledge of philosophy.

I invite you to discuss your objectives and challenges in order to develop a teaching method and techniques that meet your expectations. The course is based on dialogue and mutual trust: it depends on the subject matter being taught, but above all on your desires and goals.
For the past fifteen years, I have taught philosophy, history and political science in various contexts: at university, in high school, in adult education programs, and by giving private lessons to French speakers and non-French speakers.

In the three disciplines offered, my courses aim to enable you to acquire the essential knowledge and methods, and to develop your skills in an individualized way.

I would be happy to support you in preparing for the Baccalaureate, in philosophy and in HGGSP.

Philosophy is a fascinating but often difficult discipline to grasp. For this reason, it discourages many. Yet it is essential for understanding the world around us. Philosophy develops critical thinking while allowing each individual to better understand themselves and analyze social issues.

In this course you will learn how to:
- read and analyze the structure of a philosophical text;
- to distinguish between the presuppositions, arguments and thesis of a text;
- identify the flaws in the arguments and build your own counter-arguments;

I will also provide you with some basic propositional logic to help you construct more effective arguments. Furthermore, you will acquire a solid philosophical foundation through the study of the great authors of the tradition: Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Locke, Kant, Nietzsche, and Marx, to name just a few. However, this course also aims to be an entry point to understanding more recent theories, which is why we will not hesitate to explore more contemporary texts related to feminist, ecological, technocritical, or transhumanist thought. All of this is done with the same goal: to develop and enrich your thinking.

Package deals available for regular students.

Want to learn Serbian in a relaxed and practical way?

I am a native Serbian speaker and an English teacher with an MA in English Language and Literature. In these lessons, we'll focus on helping you actually use Serbian in real conversations rather than simply memorizing isolated words and grammar rules.

Depending on your level and goals, we can work on:

• Everyday Serbian and useful expressions
• Conversation and speaking confidence
• Vocabulary and pronunciation
• Serbian grammar explained clearly and practically
• Serbian culture, customs, music, films, and everyday life
• Serbian for travel, relationships, family, or personal interest

The lessons can be adapted to complete beginners as well as learners who already know some Serbian and want more opportunities to practise.

If you're interested in Serbian language and culture, want to communicate with Serbian-speaking friends or family, are planning to visit Serbia, or simply want to learn a new language, we'll build the lessons around your goals and interests.

My approach is relaxed, friendly, and judgment-free. You don't need to be afraid of making mistakes — speaking and experimenting with the language is how you improve.

Let's make Serbian something you can actually use, not just something you study.
