Hey everyone! I am William, I've been teaching music for several years in person and now 3 years online. I teach students how to play music by ear. My classes are aimed at beginners up to intermediate students. I teach piano, though I invite students of any instrument to study with me to improve their listening and comprehension skills.

My approach emphasizes teaching individuals how to play music by ear. This method is essential for those who truly wish to comprehend music at the same level as their native language. With this approach, reading music is not necessary, although having a basic understanding of notation can significantly help in developing musical comprehension and repertoire.

Once you have become acquainted with your instrument and have grasped the fundamentals of music theory, we will proceed by selecting songs to learn in a rhythmic style. Emphasis will be placed on mastering chords and rhythm initially, with additional details being incorporated at a later stage. The selection of songs can either be based on your personal preferences or my suggestions, tailored to suit the student's requirements.

Along the way, I will introduce proper technique, exercises, listening skills, and musical vocabulary in a natural progression, grounded in your favorite music. Using this method, interested students will also have the opportunity to explore their creativity and learn to compose their own music and recreate the music of others, entirely by ear.

I can teach viola classes at all levels, and violin to students up to the sixth of Professional Grade. I can also teach music theory at all levels and support the study of other subjects taught at the conservatory, such as music history, analysis, orchestra, chamber music, etc.

I teach online via Zoom, using software which allows you to see the exact keys I'm playing on my keyboard.

My teaching method is to focus on whatever type of music the student loves most, and to build from there. I believe that many people give up their dream of playing an instrument simply because they aren't inspired enough, so my goal is to instill a love for music, whatever that means personally for each individual student.

Everyone learns differently and has their own pace and rhythm. I have some students who like to have a regular weekly or biweekly lesson, and others who just get in touch once in a while when they have digested the previous lesson and feel ready to build on it. Whatever the case, I am very flexible and we can figure out what works best for you.

A bit about me:

Originally honing my skills on the British jazz scene and holding residencies in restaurants and bars around the country, I then went on to tour the world playing on cruise ships, hotels and festivals. I returned to London to complete my master's in jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music, and during this time performed regularly at Ronnie Scotts, The Vortex and many other venues across the UK. I then spent two years in South America learning about salsa and Cuban music. I now mainly work as a transcriber, writing sheet music for all instruments including full Big Band scores. I have also worked extensively in musical theatre, most recently as musical director for 'Jersey Boys', and on the first US national tour of 'Summer: the Donna Summer Musical'. The video shown below is from my stint playing and directing 'After Midnight', a show set to the music of the Duke Ellington Big Band.
