I have always loved exchanging and passing on what I have learned. My mother being a German teacher, I have always been immersed in the world of education. I started tutoring when I was in high school, and I still do today.

My journey :

I help academically and psychologically students in History-Geography, SES and English. Hello! My name is Daniel, I am a BA History graduate from a Russell Group university looking to utilise my knowledge and passion for the humanities, arts and social sciences for students who need help in these fields. I have experience tutoring A Level History, specifically in the OCR and AQA courses. I also received an A at A Level for Sociology, and I am beginning a master's degree in Political Sociology this Autumn at the London School of Economics. I aim to primarily tutor A Level and GCSE, but I am more than happy to tutor Key Stage 3 or younger.

Politics and Sociology are two of my biggest passions, starting from A-level and continuing through my degree focusing on these two areas. By doing these two as my degree I have been able to build on the skills needed in order to understand how these different systems work, and now am able to specialise in both politics and sociology both for university pupils and A-Level pupils. My main goal is to ensure that students are challenged and engaged throughout the full-time, while being able to adapt lessons in order to benefit the pupil rather than just generic ones that do not help the individual. In these neuro-divergent times, the binary division of "one language or two" in bilinguals is perhaps due some contestation, which students are capable of providing. I have always found bilingual production models (and the ubiquitous Powerpoint slide) that university teachers provide a hindrance because of their lack of explicitness and discussion - they are just not relatable as presented nor do they provide much information or examples for monolingual students.

Code-switching, a by-product of bilingualism, is now a term that is even found in minority-ethnic neighbourhood grafitti ("can white people code-switch" a found example). Please note that this is a linguistic term, used for switching between two languages, and not between local or social varieties of English.

My personal position is that there is no such thing as bilingualism: there is always a language that suffers attrition, and one language that prevails, mostly because of its prestigious standing over the other language. On the other hand, a child exposed to more than one language cannot be truly monolingual.

For this course (very popular at universities around Europe both at undergraduate and postgraduate level) we shall go through the terms used to discuss bilingualism, in detail, and then discuss, with the help of published books and articles, who can be considered bilingual (or are we all, one other language lying dormant?). Can bilingualism be defined by the speaker, instead of the "community"? Can it be imposed by the State? Does a bilingual brain function in the same manner as a monolingual brain? These are research questions that emerge as dissertation or thesis topics both at undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

A-Level Sociology is one of the hardest subjects to tackle at A-Level if you are not familiar with memorising an entire compilation of names and theories. I specialise in teaching Sociology and achieved an A* at A-Level with OCR Sociology. In spite of this, I can teach and adapt to other exam boards like AQA, and there is a demand for Sociology tutoring. I currently study at King's College London University, but am free during weekends to tutor.
