It was there where Pepa started to define her musical personality, identity strongly linked to African-American music: Blues, Soul, and Jazz. Her strong interest and desire to learn more about music motivated her to go to Cuba, where she learned about Trova, Feeling, and the Cuban Son. She participated with the Latin Jazz group Mezcla at La Zorra y el Cuervo jazz club (The Fox and the Crow) in La Havana. Later she moved to London for seven years, where Della Rods, Cerys Hogg, and Clare Foster trained her in modern harmony and vocal improvisation.
