Latin is one of the most fascinating, engaging, and also challenging languages of all. Basis of so many western languages, with deeply embedded impact on the English language itself, that are many reasons to dive into Cicero's prose or Vergil's verse. Used up into the 19th in much technical literature, the knowledge of Latin can unlock a truly vast world of knowledge and, of course, beauty from the many works of Latin literature. Apart from that, knowing Latin truly helps to learn the neo-latin languages (Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian); I should know it, as I am a native speaker of Portuguese. In this course, I will show the basics of this fascinating language the only way I know, and the only way I think it actually works, that is, through a careful balance of good old grammar and basic vocabulary.

Learning Classical languages can be a hard challenge to students, regardless of age and education background. My course is designed to facilitate the learning of Latin and Ancient Greek at any level, by focusing especially on historical grammar so that my students understand the way these languages work rather than just learning by heart. Whenever a new grammar topic is addressed, I am going to work with my students on relevant translations so that they can fully improve their learning with actual practice. Texts will be thoughtfully chosen in accordance with my students' level in advance. For those wishing to improve their Italian, my speaking classes are designed for students with a good knowledge who want to enhance their speaking and listening skills. My conversation classes are also meant to make my students more familiar with the huge variety of dialects and accents that are commonly spoken throughout the Italian peninsula, a phenomenon which can turn out puzzling to learners opting for a living experience in Italy.

I am a permanent literature teacher and have taught in Italian secondary schools for more than twenty years. I am qualified to teach in secondary schools in the humanities (Italian, Literature, History, Geography, Civic Education) and I obtained a PhD in Latin Literature and Philology in 2016. I love the language but know the difficulties it can present and am passionate at helping others get to grips with it. I specialise in teaching Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation, from beginners to university level. I have degrees from the University of York and Middlesex University, and I have been teaching Classics since 1992. My approach is to focus on reading skills rather than abstract teaching of grammar and syntax. Greek and Latin are human languages, in which humans wrote to communicate what the considered important truths. The languages are best learnt by studying simplified versions of these important truths, and by proceeding by stages to their original utterances.

This class is for all those who want to learn Latin, from complete beginners to intermediate level. My goal is to tailor each class to each student's needs, whether that is to prepare for GCSE or A-level exams or to help someone learn purely out of interest. In a first class we can assess which areas you need to work on, whether that may be grammar, vocabulary or something else. Generally, I see languages as a pattern which is laid out by grammar and then filled in by vocabulary, something which we can go over and then put into practice in classes by doing translations. We can also read Latin texts, possibly set texts for an exam if you are preparing for one, and discuss textual commentary and context. Above all I also aim to encourage a love of Latin language and literature in all those keen to learn.

I am an Italian synthetic organic chemist by training, having completed my undergraduate and post-graduate education in University of Milan, where I specialised in organic chemistry with a thesis on the total synthesis of a natural compound called Evodiamine. I then moved to the UK, where I was awarded a PhD on synthetic methodology on the synthesis of statically hindered cyclopropanes. I later took several post-doctoral experiences in medicinal chemistry, and also gained industrial experience in CRO, progressing form Senior role to Leader. Aside from chemistry lesson, I am very happy to help students to improve their italian, or develop a closer understanding of latin.
