This open-level online class is a guided journey into the body through movement, mindfulness, and dance improvisation. Grounded in somatic principles and informed by contemporary dance practices, the session offers a space to gently awaken, mobilise, and stretch into your full range—physically, emotionally, and creatively. We begin with soft, grounding movements to connect breath and body, gradually opening into more spacious, improvisational explorations. Techniques borrowed from contemporary dance support your awareness of space, weight, rhythm, and sensation. Along the way, we weave in rich imagery and playful movement tasks to awaken imagination and channel creative energy—allowing for both spontaneity and expression. Held online, this class is easily adaptable to your home environment—whether you’re in a spacious living room or a small corner of your room. We work with the space we’re in, encouraging sensitivity, curiosity, and ease in how we inhabit and move through it. The class is designed to be inclusive and accessible, with movement options offered throughout to support different bodies, energy levels, and abilities. Whether seated, standing, or lying down—you’re invited to take part in a way that feels right for you. Whether you’re a professional dancer looking to complement your training, or someone seeking a gentle yet energising way to release tension, reconnect with your body, and refresh your creativity—this class meets you where you are. No prior dance experience is needed. All bodies, backgrounds, and abilities are warmly welcome. Expect a supportive atmosphere, guided invitations to move (not perform), and a chance to feel more grounded, expressive, and alive by the end of the session.

Hello! I’m Sreelekshmi from the scenic state of Kerala in South India. I’ve been passionate about Bharatanatyam since childhood and have had the privilege of performing on numerous stages across India. Currently, I am learning under the guidance of Smt. Meera Sreenarayanan. Bharatanatyam has not only enhanced my physical strength, stamina, and endurance, but also sharpened my mental focus, discipline, and concentration. The art form’s intricate movements, when practiced with dedication, contribute to one’s overall development. Having recently moved to Vienna, I’m excited to share my knowledge and love for Bharatanatyam through this platform. Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form originating from Tamil Nadu, India, is known for its grace, purity, tenderness, and sculpturesque poses. This vibrant dance form involves postures such as a fixed upper torso, bent legs, and flexed knees, combined with footwork, and a vocabulary of sign language based on gestures of hands, eyes, and face muscles. Here are some key points about my Bharatanatyam classes: Structure of Bharatanatyam Classes: 1. Basic Level (Beginner) - Adavus: Basic steps and movements - Postures: Learning the basic stance (Aramandi) - Hastas: Hand gestures and their meanings - Rhythmic Patterns: Understanding of Talam (rhythm) - Simple Dance Items: Alarippu (an invocatory piece) 2. Intermediate Level - Complex Adavus: More advanced steps - Nritta: Pure dance without emotions - Nritya: Expressive dance with emotions - Jathiswaram: A dance item that combines adavus and rhythmic patterns Duration and Frequency - Classes: Typically held weekly, with each session lasting 1-2 hours. Classes can be tailored according to the needs of the individual. - Practice: Daily practice is encouraged for better proficiency. Requirements - Attire: Traditional dance costume or comfortable pant/leggings with top and a shawl to tie around the waist - Music: Classical Carnatic music accompaniment - Space: A spacious area with a smooth floor Benefits - Physical Fitness: Enhances flexibility, strength, and stamina - Mental Discipline: Improves concentration and memory - Cultural Awareness: Deepens understanding of Indian culture and mythology
