The class will chart the development of European, American and International art history from 1900 to the present day, beginning with Post-Impressionism and its off-springs Cubism and Expressionism, the move into Abstraction post-war, to Conceptualism and Minimalism of the 1960s and 1970s which still have significant relevance in today's Contemporary art world. The focus will be on the wider political issues that impacted art history of the time, thereby using art history as a novel and unique lens through which we can gauge world history events, and its politics, in a potentially new and interesting light.

Students will explore key historical periods, influential artists, and cultural icons while also gaining an understanding of Italy’s diverse regional traditions, cuisine, and contemporary lifestyle. The course includes discussions on Italian art, architecture, literature, and music, with a particular focus on how these elements reflect and influence the language.
