I treat the subject in a structured way based on pronunciation, grammar and syntax, with special attention to reading and translation in the linguistic and cultural context of the reference language and with references to the legacy that these languages have given to Modern languages and their importance in the context of world culture. The lessons from the beginning are based on frequent pronunciation, accent and prosody exercises, to accustom the student to the peculiarities of the typical oral expression of languages. The study of grammar and syntax is regularly integrated with a series of exercises, tasks and translation sessions dedicated to the latest topics discussed. My particular interest is to teach students the ancient languages with reference also to the cultural, literary and artistic tradition of the linguistic and cultural areas of belonging, for a more complete understanding of the languages and their specificities.

I offer tutoring up to university level (in Latin) and secondary-school level (in Greek), based around the John Taylor JACT courses, but with the freedom to go wherever the student wants. Applications for Classics at Oxford and Cambridge both involve a language assessment, for which I provide expert tutoring and guidance in as a first-class Classics and English graduate from Oxford. Classics at Oxford uses the Classics Admissions Test (CAT) for Course I (for students with Latin/Greek to A Level) or the Classical Language Aptitude Test (CLAT) for Course II (for students without Latin/Greek) to decide who will be invited for interview. At Cambridge only candidates shortlisted for interview will be required to take such assessment, which will be a translation exercise for the 3-year course, or a language aptitude interview for the 4-year. All assessments involve careful application of linguistic knowledge, whether of classical languages or English, which I will ensure you are extremely well-prepared to do. Applicants are also required to submit two pieces of written work prior to interview, which I am able to advise about if requested.
