Hello all, I am Rotem (24), I am a guitarist and a composer, and currently pursuing my master's in music composition and theory in ZHdK. I graduated with honors studying jazz performance with classical composition as a side subject from New England Conservatory (Boston).

I have been performing, touring and teaching around the world: New York, Washington DC, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, and more!

I have grown up with educaiton both in jazz and classical practices, and therefore am very versatile and fluent with both worlds which i believe creates a unique and interesting perspective for approaching music.

In our lessons, we could focus on anything you'd like to: guitar, music theory, composition, ear training, electronic music, improvisation (jazz and free improvisation), rhythm, and many more.

The lessons can be held in English, or Hebrew, either in my house in Escher Wyss-Platz, in Toni Areal, or your place.

About Me

New England Conservatory (Boston) - Bachelor's studies with Stratis Minakakis and Joe Morris, both guitar and composition.

ZHdK - Master's studies in composition with Isabel Mundry, with minor in music theory.

Both degrees funded with merit-based scholarships

Logic Pro X is an incredibly powerful application that puts pro audio quality recordings into the hands of amateur and hobbyist musicians and producers.

I have used Logic Pro in professional contexts, recording and producing numerous recordings and have years of experience using this piece of software.

I will explain the user interface (which can be daunting to new users,) in Logic and show how users can get the most out of this awesome piece of software in a relatively short time.

This class would be useful for people who wish to learn to create and record their own music, music teachers who would like to expand their knowledge of music technology and apply it to the classroom and any other people for whom recording audio is a necessary component of their work.

Composing music is very similar to writing novels. Of course there are "novels" and Novels...and the secret to create expressive, compelling, and successful ones is the ability to write with emotions, tension, and conflict.
With music is exactly the same, and in order to to so, musicians needs to have "at arm's distance" all the tools and knowledge that will allow them "to sculpture the air in the performance into something" (F. Zappa)
As a musician, have you ever wondered:
what if I replace this A min. chord with an E min. 7 ?
is it better to stay "Tonal" or go "Modal" on this measure?
what if I establish a stronger emotional response by changing this scale fragment into a Phrygian?
shall I drive more of a rhythmic feeling by leveraging quartal harmony?
what chords could I actually ask the guys from my band to add to this measures so that my solo would sound more interesting?
how can I phrase this better to that my songwriting drives a more melodic and fluid verse?

I specialized in contemporary music composition in Bucharest, Birmingham and Paris having finished with honors my Bachelor, my Master and my Doctorate degree in this field. I also have a pedagogical degree and 2 years of experience in which I taught music composition, musical forms, poliphony, orchestration, music theory and solfege at the National University of Music from Bucharest. In 2022 I finished a 2nd Master's Degree in Film Music Composition at the ZHdK.

This class is for both beginners who want to compose music as a hobby and to aspiring professional composers. The main topic of my doctoral thesis was the compositional idea and the processes involved in the creative undertakings. How does one reach the final stage of a composition from just a few ideas? How can we improve this endeavour? What strategies and techniques are needed in order to do that?

The class will be customized for each student so in order to achieve a certain objective in music composition the lessons can include elements of music theory, harmony, poliphony, orchestration, improvisation, music notation (Finale & Dorico) and music production (StudioOne).

Although solfege and improvisation are extremely useful (I dare say even indispensable) for a professional composer, they can also be means to an end for passionate music lovers. Solfege and strategies that come with it can help your singing and music sight reading. And improvisation is such a fun and relaxing activity that I think everybody should do it!

It is important to me to respond to the specific wishes of the student. That means that you can show me what you're musically at right now. For example, this can be a song that you are writing. I will look at your compositions with you and give you feedback and tips. I will also show you different approaches to composing that can give you new ideas or are helpful if the writing process gets stuck. We look for inspiration in examples from music and try to explain our theories. I am stylistically very open and have experience from string quartet to pop songs (with pre-production on Ableton, Garageband etc.) to big band (notation on Sibelius). I just love the music and am happy to share my knowledge.

Hey there, I'm Zeynep! I was born in Turkey, Istanbul but I was raised internationally and went to a half English- half Turkish bilingual school. I am currently living in Zurich, Switzerland. I'm studying architecture at the ETH. I'm very passionate about teaching and I really enjoy it! Composition lessons for children (age 6 to 14)

Lesson plan: learning to express musical ideas through graphic notation and improvisation, leaning to notice and deeply listen to the everyday sounds around us and create new sonic ideas through drawing, writing and improvising.
Prior knowledge: no musical knowledge needed

Composition lessons for children from the age of 14 and adults
