Hello!
I am Joan, a professional classical guitarist newly based in Vienna. I am from Barcelona, obtained a First Class Bachelor's degree in Music and a Master's degree in Performance at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, and I have now landed in Vienna, where I do a Postgraduate Certificate at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw) with Prof. Alvaro Pierri. I am also an active performer, with more than 30 concerts a year across Europe, the USA and the UK.
Besides performing, I have been teaching for more than 10 years now. Last year as a Junior Fellow at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, but also privately, in music schools, conservatoires, primary and secondary schools and summer camps. Mainly 1 to 1 but very often ensembles, chamber music or orchestras.
I have always considered guiding people into learning music a central part of my passion and profession, and always put special attention to Pedagogy. I was lucky to have lessons with some of the world's best professionals like A. Pierri, D. Russell, R. Dyens, M. Barrueco, L. Brouwer, A. Vidovic...
I am now looking forward to connecting with new students here in Vienna or online!
I always try to explore what is the best way for each particular student to develop, so our lessons could take many different approaches. I am happy to hear what you expect from the lessons, adapt to it, and at the same time offer my professional guidance. One of my principles is to be effective in all possible ways when playing.
Above all, I will make sure you learn!
Whether you are already playing masterpieces and are interested in new approaches, have been playing for some time, or still haven't started playing, I'd be glad to help you.
Joan

About Me
My biography:
Joan Furió has performed as a soloist across Europe and the United States, in prestigious venues such as the Milton Court Concert Hall, the Eduard Toldrà Auditorium at the Conservatori Municipal de Música de Barcelona, Casa Luthier, St. James’s Piccadilly, Valencia’s Oceanogràfic, and The Bitter End in New York City. His performances have been featured in festivals and concert series including the Festival de Música Religiosa de Vic, Festival de Música de Rialp, Dijous Concert (CMMB), Barnes Music Festival, Ely Arts Festival, Strings @ Eight (GSMD), as well as for the British Spanish Society.
Passionate about collaborating with other musicians, Joan frequently performs in chamber music formations. He has formed successful duets with violin, voice, guitar, and harp, recorded the album Acordándonos with mezzo-soprano Sofia Llovet, and has been actively performing with soprano Maud Niklas in the UK, Spain, and Switzerland.
Recent highlights include his debut with orchestra, playing the Malcolm Arnold Guitar Concerto with the Silk Street Sinfonietta conducted by Antoine Veillerette in London. He will perform it again with the English Chamber Orchestra at the English Music Festival in 2026.
Joan is currently a Junior Fellow at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and a postgraduate student at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien (mdw) in Vienna, under Professor Alvaro Pierri.
He holds a Master of Performance with Distinction and a First Class Bachelor of Music with Honours from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where he was a scholar studying under professors Robert Brightmore, Sean Shibe, Sasha Savaloni, and Toby Carr. He has received important guidance from Alvaro Pierri and has participated in lessons with many leading guitarists, including Leo Brouwer, Roland Dyens, David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, Carles Trepat, Margarita Escarpa, and Sergio Assad. His studies have been generously supported by GSMD, Help Musicians UK, the Spanish Society of Performers, Pedro Pons, and Eurostrings.
He won the chamber and solo honorific prizes at Barcelona’s Conservatoire CMMB, where he studied with Joan Furió Navarro.
Committed to the promotion of music in society, Joan is the organiser and artistic director of the international Villa Margarita Music Fest in Spain since 2021, now supported by a broad range of public and private partners.
"A recital with Joan Furió is always a celebration, he was born to perform. His naturally magnetic stage presence, creative spirit and impressive command of the instrument delivers interpretations that captivate and touch the heart. He deserves to be heard.” - Dr Evan Rothstein - Guildhall School of Music & Drama - Chairman (2009-2016) European Chamber Music Teachers Association
“A talented and highly committed young musician, Joan offers outstanding performances embodying sensitivity and panache, a fine young player who I’m sure will enjoy a successful professional career.” Robert Brightmore (Guitarist) Head of Guitar Studies, GSMD
“Excellent sense of style and projection” Jacqueline Ross, GSMD
