With me, you'll play real music from your very first lesson, not endless drills. I hold a doctorate in composition and music theory and a master's in piano performance, so I don't just show you what to play, I explain why it works. You'll feel the difference: once you understand what you're doing, you practise faster and play with more conviction.

My lessons usually start with technique, then we get into your repertoire, classical, pop, jazz, or film music, whatever you're drawn to. If you're taking voice lessons, I'll accompany you live at the piano.

I teach everyone: from your very first note to conservatory level, from kids to adults picking it up for the first time. I taught at university level for years and now judge international music competitions so I also know exactly how to prepare you for Music exams and auditions because I know what the jury is listening for. I teach in English, having trained and performed across three continents for over 30 years and I bring all of that into every lesson.

Extra information

Lessons take place in my home studio in Utrecht, at an acoustic grand piano so there are no extra room or travel costs. The rate includes everything: personalised repertoire suggestions, exam and audition preparation and for voice students, live piano accompaniment in every lesson.

Sheet music advice is included too; I'll help you find the right editions before you buy anything. Lessons are 45 or 60 minutes, and the first lesson is free, so you can experience the difference before you commit to anything.

The way I teach actually depends entirely on the student. The way I explain the concepts, plan and structure the lessons and approach each subject all depends on whether the student is a beginner, intermediate or advanced, and whether he or she has some experience on the subject.

Each student has different needs and different abilities. It's just a matter of getting to know the student, in order to identify both the weaknesses and strengths on which to work.

Hi, I’m Heewon from South Korea and I currently study music in HKU Conservatory.

For about 14 years I have studied various aspects of music, I’ve studied piano, vocals and composition, and now I am studying piano in the jazz and pop course. Not only have I played lots of jazz and pop, I have played lots of classical, neo-soul and gospel, to me it’s important to be well versed in lots of genre’s. How amazing is it to play the music that lives in your head?
