My name is Rhody (they/he) and I’m just the person you’re looking for!

A current student at Berklee College of Music Online, I have been playing and performing cello for 25 years - as well as 23 years of guitar - and I have been teaching to kids, tweens, teens, and adults since 2012! I’m incredibly patient, an avid encourager, and I LOVE helping others discover their own gift of music within them. I specialize in beginner, intermediate, and upper intermediate cello, as well as beginner, intermediate, and upper intermediate guitar.

If you’re looking to

~ brush up on your current instrument skills
~ get better at theory

or if you're interested in

~songwriting for guitar
~getting better at Garageband, Logic Pro, another DAW, or Finale

or if you want to

About Me
Hi everyone. When I was a kid, my dad asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I told him "a music teacher".

Early on I felt the profound impact my teachers had on me, and I KNEW that was what I wanted to do for others. My teachers were excellnt role models who were patient, kind, inviting, and encouraging of my ability - and that's exactly the person you're going to get if you choose to work with me. I love being someone who helps my students shine brighter than they ever did before, I feel it in my bones that this is what I'm meant to do!

The kind of people that choose me as their teacher are ones who tend to need a little more encouragement, who need that one extra person in their corner to give them a pep talk. At the same time, students who choose me often come when they're looking to get over that hump in songwriting, theory, or instrument skill level. These are the ones who are "right there" and are looking to level up.

Depending on your instrument, level, and personal preferences, I tend to use the Suzuki Method for Cello, The Guitar Method sprinkled with a few choice youtube videos for guitar, as well as hands on paper-and-pencil, then hand-on-instrument theory application. Why learn theory if you're not gonna apply it, am I right? However I'm flexible and often ask my students what they're in the mood to learn, and I adapt to their needs.

First of all, congratulations on getting this far: finding the right teacher is not easy, but the hardest part is behind you.

My method is innovative and differs from the classic French system (obsolete and archaic):

The student learns to become independent and autonomous by integrating technical principles applicable to different scenarios, somewhat according to the philosophy of Asian martial arts (but rest assured, nothing martial here, everything is done flexibly).
My lessons are fun, and are aimed at beginners as well as experienced ones.

The first step consists of first validating a few quick theoretical and technical bases. This is a crucial step to progress quickly and efficiently: what is a grade? A deal ? An arpeggio? A range ? How to hold a pick? In what position to play?

Once the basics have been acquired, the student can learn pieces of their choice or work on particular playing techniques (picking, alternate picking, tapping, etc.) always in accordance with their needs, and above all their desires! Obviously the content is adapted to each person, the same goes for the style: Rock, Blues, Pop, Variety, Reggae, Metal... the possibilities are endless.

For those who wish to risk it, the theme of improvisation is also on the program:
Contrary to popular belief, this discipline is not reserved for the elite or the experienced, everyone is capable of it with a little training and an appropriate method.

Music is an artistic field, everyone can see a future in it as long as the motivation is there!
