Hi, I’m Josie – a performing saxophonist and passionate teacher based in Cape Town/Stellenbosch. I recently completed my second Master’s degree at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. I also have both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree (Cum Laude) in Classical Saxophone Performance from Stellenbosch University.

My love for the saxophone began at the age of ten, and it’s been the heart of my journey ever since. Today, I’m dedicated to sharing that passion with students who are just as fascinated by this expressive and versatile instrument.

As an active performer, I collaborate with composers on new works for the saxophone and am deeply involved in research that promotes South African saxophone compositions. My work is driven by a commitment to expand the saxophone’s repertoire and reach, both on stage and through scholarship. While I specialize in classical saxophone, I’m equally excited by crossover projects and have experience performing in a wide range of musical styles.

Whether you're a total beginner or a more experienced player, I’m here to help you grow at your own pace. I believe that every student is unique, so I tailor each lesson to your individual goals, needs, and musical interests.

As I no longer reside in the EU, lessons will be online via a music teaching platform.

About Me

Hi, my name is Josie. I am originally from South Africa. I am a Master's candidate at the Royal Conservatoire, The Hague. I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree (Cum Laude) in classical saxophone performance from Stellenbosch University (South Africa).

I am an active performing musician. My current projects and research involve collaborating with composers to create new music for the saxophone. I have done several research projects promoting South African saxophone compositions.

I have teaching experience both locally and abroad. I taught as a student teacher at the Stellenbosch Conservatorium as well as schools in South Africa and The Hague. I love teaching and I believe that it is important to share the gift of music with those who are willing to learn.

During a lesson I encourage the student to work on: posture, breathing and the position of the mouth (embouchure), helping the projection of sound; the development of the tone; i teach the student how to phrase and play a beautiful melody; techniques of improvisation; understanding harmony; having confidence in his/her playing skills; techniques of listening and interacting with the rhythm section; learning new songs and experiencing different styles of music; Introductions to key saxophonists. Raúl is a Spanish saxophonist who finished his DIDACTIC MASTER in 2018 at the École Supérieure des Arts in Mons. Previously, he also completed a MASTER OF INTERPRETATION at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels (2015-2017) in the class of Alain Crepin and Simon Diricq.
He studied at the "Musikene" (Higher Conservatory of Music of the Basque Country) with Eric Devallon, Tomás Jérez, Antonio Felipe Belijar and Miguel Ángel Lorente.

Passionate about multidisciplinary artistic creation, he thinks of the mixing of all the arts in the same show as an aesthetic goal. This type of research could be observed in his project for his final master's recital in Brussels where he created a project based on Maslow's theory of the hierarchy of human needs where he mixed live, recorded music, dance, light shows and effects under the name: “according to Maslow... ”

In terms of his career as a concert artist, he has played in different ensembles (solo performances, duo, trio, quartet, orchestra...) and different countries such as Japan (Artisanal Musical Fair "Suono Italia" 2010), Belgium (Festival Musiq3 2016), Artonov Festival at BOZAR in 2016...), France (Dax chamber music festival 2011) or Spain (Music Festival “Quincena Musical” 2015, Aste Nagusia 2015, Heineken Jazzaldia 2014, Festival Kutxa 2015, Intercentros Melómano 2010).

Are you a beginner?? No worries: no experience is required! 😁
I can teach you the basics to produce sounds with your saxophone: position of the embouchure (teeth, tongue, lips and vocal cords' position, an element often forgotten), fingerings, use of diafragma,...
After the first two lessons spent on the mouthpiece and neck for the sound production, we will immediately start to play some super easy duos together to practice your capacity of listening, pay attention to the other, ear training as well. I normally use the book of Peter Wastall (titled Learn as you play) as support, but it is not mandatory. There are plenty of good books btw!

Are you an intermediate / advanced student?? I am sure you can still improve in all the basics, but on a different level. I'll teach you the importance of the "voicing" (technique named by the american saxophonist and pedagogue Donald Sinta) to improve your sound production and projection as well as the capacity of correcting and improving the intonation. You can learn all about phrasing and music interpretation, from tonal music until contemporary atonal compositions. And still, you can improve your playing together, practicing in duo on different aspects like tuning, balance, interpretation, performance etc.

In the classes we will address the different elements that make up music in different styles, knowing the particular language of each one. To do this, we will work on the different tools that we have with each instrument at the level at which each one is. We all know music but many times they make us believe that no, that it is necessary to know how to read and write. That is the graphic part of the language that we will learn little by little, music is a compendium of many other things. Some that we already know and others to know.

We will study the use of the keys and the positions of the clarinet, or the sax, the best way to position ourselves whether we play standing or sitting, the most efficient way to use the air, the diaphragm, the muscles. We will learn to form a good embouchure and we will develop a study method adapted to each one, according to their tastes, possibilities and interests.
I work with boys and girls from different parts of the world as well as with adults and the elderly.

In my experience I learned that, truly, the greatest limitation that we find ourselves is the very feeling of not being able, of believing that we cannot. The support of a dedicated teacher is essential to get out of those places where we accidentally enter and that sometimes limit us. We all feel that sometime. It is time for us to remedy it.

My name is Federico and I am a professional and Award Winning saxophone player.
I worked at Koninklijk Conservatorium of Bruxelles as an Assistant Professor of Jeroen Van Herzeele the jazz saxophone professor.
I graduated at Conservatorio G.Martucci of Salerno (Italy) and had both Bachelor and Master with full marks with honors. During the course of my studies i also spent two academic years abroad , one at the Kask and Conservatorium of Ghent with the supervision of Bart Defoort and one at the Koninklijk Conservatorium of Bruxelles with John Ruocco.
In 2017 i won the "Massimo Urbani International Jazz Competition" prize that saw as head of the jury Kurt Rosenwinkel & Fabrizio Bosso.
I play in several Jazz bands and I have been performing all around Europe.
I recorded a solo album called "Right Now" with the famous Italian label "Philology Records" & the album"Supernova" with my own band. I also recorded several albums with different bands and of many styles, from jazz, funk to pop.
I toured with the famous Italian Drummer Tullio De Piscopo (Pino Daniele, Mina, Astor Piazzolla's drummer) and also had the chance to make a variety of television appearances on Italian National Television (Rai1, Rai5, Rai3).

I am a classical saxophonist and music educator dedicated to sharing my passion for performance and teaching. My journey with the saxophone began at the age of twelve, and over the years I have developed a deep appreciation for both solo and chamber music performance. I strive to inspire my students to combine solid technique with genuine musical expression, helping them build confidence, discipline, and artistry in their playing.

I have also received several national awards, including Second Prize at the National Little Golden Bell Wind Competition (2018), First Prize at the China Musicians Association Elite Competition (2019), and the Excellent Award at the “Beautiful Sound of China” National Saxophone Exhibition (2024).

Currently, I am continuing my advanced studies at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent in Belgium, working under Professors Koen Maas and Raf Minten. My teaching approach emphasizes clarity of sound, stylistic understanding, and the development of each student’s unique artistic identity.
