About Me

Yoichi is a New York–based jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and rail photographer originally from Tokyo, Japan.

A versatile artist with a cross-disciplinary voice, he leads the Yoichi Trio and has collaborated with a wide range of internationally acclaimed musicians. His selected collaborators include Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Ornette Coleman, Pharoah Sanders, Oliver Lake, Norman Connors, Michael Henderson, Terell Stafford, Tim Warfield Jr., Craig Harris, Vanessa Rubin, Carla Cook, Bobby Porcelli, Cecil Bridgewater, Najee, Dexter Wansel, The Last Poets and Wolfgang Puschnig.

He is among the very few Asian pianists who had the opportunity to record with Ornette Coleman, an experience that deeply shaped his musical identity.

earned his B.A. in Jazz Studies from Temple University and his M.M. in Jazz Performance from Queens College, CUNY. His compositional and arranging work spans small ensembles to large jazz orchestras, and his writing has been performed in the U.S., Japan, and Europe. He has contributed articles and analyses to Jazz Japan and has served as a guest lecturer and ensemble coach.

As an educator, has taught as Adjunct Faculty at York College, CUNY, where he instructed courses in jazz piano, improvisation, and ensemble playing. He also taught for one semester at Boston University, coaching young musicians at one of the most respected summer programs in the U.S.

Beyond his musical career, is active as a rail photographer, gaining recognition for work that captures the visual rhythm of metropolitan life. His photography has been featured by NYC Tourism, presented by the Center for Railroad Photography and Art, and shared by major transit agencies including the MTA, Metro-North Railroad, and Long Island Rail Road. In Japan, his photographs have received several awards in regional and national competitions.

Now based in New York City, continues to explore the intersection of music, visual art, and urban culture through his performances, compositions, teaching, and photography.

I offer lessons in guitar/bass, piano/keyboard (classical/experimental/pop/jazz), composition/songwriting, production/recording (DAWs, mixing, editing etc). No matter what level we're on, as musicians and artists we're all part of a wonderful and strange ongoing human project, and I believe that it's my duty to share the knowledge and skills that I've accumulated throughout the course of my life and career.

Over the years, my work has branched out in many different stylistic directions but I am firmly rooted in avant-garde/classical music. I hold two degrees in composition: a Master of Music '11 from the Yale School of Music where I also taught undergraduate lessons in composition; and a BA in Music Composition from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden ('09). I've written large scale works for orchestra, chamber pieces, solo music for a variety of instruments, works with multichannel electronics, and works for theater and dance. For those interested, my recorded work is easily accessible online on a variety of labels and my scores are available from Schott Music New York.

As a pianist, I began formal training at age 6 and worked through much of the classical repertoire before deciding to focus fulltime on composition. I am also an accomplished studio musician, improviser (jazz/free/experimental), and a member of several groups/ensembles.

A firm believer in the use of intuition as a primary tool in music making of all kinds, I would like our lessons to be shaped according to your needs and interests. No matter what level you are on, my goal will always be to offer you exactly what you need at each given step. I treat each student as a unique collaborative effort.

Apart from technical and aesthetic approaches, it is usually very difficult and takes a long time to find one's 'voice' as a performer, writer or producer; this is inevitable except in rare cases, and I will endeavour to teach you to trust in your own abilities, overcome insecurities and doubts, and connect your artistic practice with a more unified mindset that goes beyond imagined technical and stylistic limitations and aesthetic policing. The main point is to eradicate unnecessary obstacles to your creativity and learn to trust your intuition and choices.

Singers like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra have left an indelible mark on American popular music through their jazz vocal stylings, fusing a conversational delivery with rhythmic and melodic improvisation. This course is tailored for each student to teach the unique characteristics of jazz singing and how to apply these characteristics to create your own sound. You will learn jazz phrasing, how to integrate good technique into jazz song styles, and how to sing with a number of time feels and grooves.

The course focuses on jazz vocal technique and delivery, including use of vocal inflections, dynamics, articulation, and interpretation, and how to improvise through rhythmic and melodic phrasing. The course then will go deeper into jazz improvisation expanding the musical vocabulary of scat studying syllabels, rhythm, and melodic ideas.

In this course we will apply these concepts to jazz tunes in various tempos and grooves, including ballads, medium swing, fast swing, and bossa nova. You'll move on to learn important considerations for effective stage presence and use of the microphone, too.

What makes a good song? This is exactly what we are going to find out. Exploring many of same techniques that are dealt with during our Composition Lessons, but in a broader more macro way. These lessons are geared to bring out your inner storyteller. By analyzing the great songs of the past and learning what makes them so effective, students will be able to internalize those tricks and techniques and add them to their own musician's toolbox. These tools will prove to be invaluable not only in crafting and shaping their musical stories, but also in overcoming writer's block. As a teacher, I always try to focus on what the student is passionate about, while keeping in mind their weaknesses or aversions. When I was a student, the most profound growth I experienced was when I was fully engaged in the act of music making. I want to guide my students along a path to fall in love with music, whatever form that may come in. I know this will be much more valuable than any technique or song I could ever teach them. While I know this is the goal, I am also aware that this won’t happen with every student. Often this process happens further down the line. In those cases I just want them to get the most they can out of music, and enjoy the process of growing as a musician and a person.

It is very important to me to teach music to a diverse community of students. This is how I grew up learning music, and it truly is a way of bringing communities together. It has also been my privilege as a teacher to serve many underprivileged communities (as a part of Oakland Summer music, and Oakland Public Conservatory), as I believe everyone deserves access to quality music education.

In my private or group lessons, I like to first gauge the students’ listening habits and any music they are listening to. In my experience with younger students, many of them have yet to start listening to music on their own. I try to provide them a space to just listen to music. This way we can work on their technique through music they already enjoy. I will often have them learn songs by ear while also working on some fundamentals such as scales or tonging. We would also work on whatever weaknesses the student may have in their own public music programs or in their other music making. Often that is reading, ear training, or general lack of knowledge. I am always happy to work on these things in a patient but challenging manner. While improvement is the goal, I know first hand that failure is an important and essential part of the learning process.
