I offer online Modern Standard Arabic (A1–B2) classes with a clear, practical approach tailored to each student. I work with adults, teenagers, and children, always considering each student's age, level, and goals. Classes can be taught in English, Spanish, or Serbo-Croatian. We start with the alphabet and pronunciation, but very early on we work on real words and expressions so you can read, write, and communicate from the beginning. In my classes, I combine structure and flexibility: grammar when necessary, but also listening, conversation, and authentic materials adapted to the level. A sample class might include a brief review, new vocabulary or reading, guided practice, and a short oral or written activity. In addition to the language, I like to incorporate elements of culture, food, geography, music, or current events, depending on the level, because learning Arabic is also about connecting with new people, cultures, and ways of seeing the world. I can also incorporate elements of Egyptian dialect if you are interested in traveling, conversing, or better understanding the real language. I offer a close, safe and supportive environment, where you can ask questions, make mistakes and move forward with confidence, always with a personalized plan according to your goals and your pace.

About Me

Marhaban! My name is Matija and I am originally from Serbia. I obtained my Bachelor degree in Arabic language and literature from the University of Belgrade and Master's in Middle Eastern studies (specialization in Arabic studies) from Leiden University in 2019. In late 2024, I completed my PhD project on the textual practices of Egyptian Christian (Coptic) communities in Europe, hosted at Radboud University in Nijmegen.
I am communicative, open and flexible person. I love learning foreign languages, reading, traveling, and exploring new place and cultures. In my Arabic classes, I like to include elements of culture, history, and everyday life next to the linguistic content (like grammar, vocabulary, etc.), so that students can learn more about different Arabic speaking countries and their cultures and peoples.

Experience / Qualifications

I worked as an Arabic teacher in a foreign language school in Belgrade from 2016 to 2018.
During my studies, I volunteered in Arabic Cultural Centre in Belgrade for 2 years, where I was translating various texts from and into Arabic, and I was directly in touch with Arabic culture through this experience.
In January 2023, I obtained the Certificate for Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language from the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo.
Since September 2024, I work as Arabic teacher at UvA Talen (Language Center of University of Amsterdam), focusing primarily on beginner and intermediate levels.
Besides these positions, I have been giving private Arabic lessons for over 6 years, mainly at beginners and intermediate levels.

Learning a foreign language is not a linear process that consists of memorising a list of words, and speaking a foreign language is not an oral translation exercise.

There are two types of approaches to acquiring knowledge:

When asked what year follows 1999, you can immediately answer 2000 without having to think for a long time and, above all, without having memorised each number individually, starting with 1, 2, 3 ... You know that numbers are formed according to a certain pattern. With only ten digits, you can form an infinite number of numbers and always know which number comes next.

When it comes to the alphabet, words and sentences, it's more or less the same, but school pedagogy, school textbooks and regular lessons still follow the rote learning approach. In the lessons I propose, you will learn to use patterns because this is more efficient and faster.
