I have been playing the flute for over a decade with performance experience as a soloist and part of ensembles through concerts, weddings, corporate events, and more. I am very passionate about music, and I love sharing my passion with others.

All of my lessons are currently online as we navigate COVID-19 together. Although I miss seeing students in person, I am delighted to share my knowledge with the greater internet community - location no longer matters! I look forward to meeting you and seeing if we are a good fit to work together!

About Me

My name is Lisa and I make the music in your life a little more special.

Growing up, I didn’t have access to formal music education, especially for flute. Most of my early learning was self-taught. When I came to Calgary for university, I auditioned for an ensemble. I was devastated when I wasn’t accepted. However, I knew I needed to keep playing. An online search uncovered a local flute teacher. She responded to my inquiry, and I spent a few years studying with her. It completely changed my life.

Today, I am privileged to share music at weddings, concerts, charity events, and more. One of my most exciting musical adventures was a trip to Portugal in 2012. Along with three other musicians, I visited schools in Porto. In our presentation, we featured famous people who practiced both science and music.

The program included scientific nuggets interspersed with musical excerpts. I also had the opportunity to perform in two public concerts and as a guest at a third. Since returning, I have guest lectured on science and music at the University of Calgary.

Education

I have undertaken private instruction, extensive self-study, and constant teaching and performance to advance my skills. I am always looking for additional opportunities to learn more about my instrument, playing, and performance by exploring new genres and working with new teachers.

Folk or classical acoustic guitar.

The teaching philosophy is adapted to the level of each individual, according to the pace of work and motivation.

For example, for beginners: Technique of the plectrum or fingers, coordination and correction of the right and left hand. Learning basic chords, simple themes, simple rhythms, reading tablatures (...).

For intermediaries: development of rhythm, construction of chords, writing of tablatures, basic notions of harmony (...).

Depending on your goals, you can learn, if you wish, to play 60 to 80% of current music from the first lessons, which often use the same chords and the same techniques. The objectives take into consideration the following points:

-Study of various playing techniques, chords, harmony, music of your choice, rhythm, with reading of tablature, teaching structured around the repertoire you like, technique of developing the musical ear
- Discovery of the neck, notes and basic positions of open chords
- Left / right hand coordination and rhythm exercises for the right hand
- Learning of different pieces of your choice
- Left hand control exercises, speed and precision
- Learning arpeggios
- Work around muscle memory
- Learning improvisation, musical play with others
- Ear training: use your ears to find chords, melodies, sounds and techniques used

- Possibility to use the guitar available on site, during the test phase.
- As our teacher is also a singing teacher, it is possible to combine the two disciplines: guitar + vocal instrument, and to work on synchronization, style and accuracy.

Turkish reed flute is an essential instrument of Turkish Classcial Music. It has a deep and dense culture dating from 13. century around. If you want to learn about how to perform it you first need a teacher educated by masters on this field. As of many teachers you can find online but you make sure that not every tutor meets with traditional style.
Solfege and method are inseperable parts of the lessons. So for beginners and intermediate students must follow a compotent tutor to learn about the way of classic form.

My name is Uma and I am originally from Spain. I have been living in The Hague for the past five years. After completing a Bachelor’s degree in Modern Flute in Madrid and a Master’s degree in Zürich, I recently finished a Bachelor’s degree in Early Music and historical flutes at the Koninklijk Conservatorium The Hague. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Music Education, which allows me to continuously refine my teaching approach.
I have more than 10 years of teaching experience and enjoy encouraging curiosity while adapting lessons to each student’s interests and needs. All ages and levels are welcome, and I strive to make learning music both structured and fun.

The focus of my instruction moreover is on intention, sound projection and expression, the mind, the breathing body, listening and clean use of the hands. Studying music can be a great joy and source of profound fulfillment, but it can also be stressful and overwhelming. Learning how to balance workloads, develop practice habits that actually work for you, and also trying to avoid falling into the trap of comparing yourself to other artists can feel like an insurmountable task. Music also tends to lead the musician into perfectionism, and a feeling that no matter what you do, you're never really measuring up.

I am in the last semester of a Masters program in Vocal Performance. Throughout the 7 years I have studied voice academically throughout my Associates degree, Bachelors degree, and now my Masters degree, I've had to learn how to develop a more holistic approach towards my music studies, and strengthen my relationship to myself and my voice. In this class, I will share everything that I've learned in my journey, and tips on how to approach practice in a way that feels manageable, and yes, even enjoyable! We will discuss how to develop a mindset that can work FOR you, not against you.
