I have a solid background in music, including going to Chetham's School of Music from 2017-2023 where I received a 9 in GCSE music, completed my piano LTCL (Trinity 2nd Diploma) at the age of 15, as well as ABRSM Grade 8 Music Theory. I am currently a Music Scholar studying A-level Music at Westminster School, in London.

Available from beginner level piano onwards, whether you're just getting started or if you've already got the basics down, I hope that my class will help you not only improve your piano playing skills, but also allow you to understand and enjoy the music more.

About Me

Hi, my name is Crystal. I'm currently a sixth form music scholar at Westminster School, where I'm studying English Literature, History, Music, and Theology & Philosophy. I completed my GCSEs as well as other music qualifications at Chetham's School of Music, and have been playing the piano since the age of 8. On the other hand, I only recently started learning to play flute in the summer of 2023 and am now working towards my Grade 8.

My lessons are designed to meet each student's needs, as well as allowing them to develop a greater understanding and love for the subject, particularly music and English. I am also open to doing FAQs about the Westminster school 16+ process, including interviews, exam preparation, the music scholarship programme, or what it's like at Westminster in general.

I teach for all levels, from children starting from zero to students who want to prepare certifications at the Conservatories, passing through amateurs or simply curious of any age.

I firmly believe in the importance of knowing how to read music and this is exactly what I teach first, obviously adapting the method to the age of my students: knowing how to read music is knowing one more language, which, if learned well, won’t ever be forgotten (like riding a bicycle!) and it is an invaluable wealth. Starting from that point I teach the position of the hand, the arm and the whole body at the piano, the fundamentals of the piano technique (giving great importance to the percussive movement of the finger and the distribution of weight), the understanding of musical language, the expression of the personality through the keyboard, the search for touch and knowledge of piano repertoire.

The theory of everything tends to be really scary and music theory can be too. I am very keen to make music theory easy for everyone. For some people there is only one way to tackle the unmentionable but I believe there are many different approaches and one of them will click with you. It is simply finding out what is best for each person. Once we find the key we can unlock the problems that have puzzled you for ages.

Music theory needs to be more than a requirement, it needs to be the way to really appreciate the music you are playing. Certain aspects can also lead to additional practical skills such as improvisation which can be very useful as well as very enjoyable.

This class is designed for conservatory students, private candidates and advanced musicians who need solid guidance in harmony, counterpoint and fugue, especially in preparation for exams and auditions.

We work on written exercises, stylistic correction and analytical understanding, with a clear method and step-by-step feedback.
