Hello future students!
My name is José and I have a Bachelor's Degree in Jazz from the "Escola Súperior de Música de Lisboa" one of the finest Jazz Universities in Europe.
I am a jazz musician with a lot of intenational performances in my career, I have played all through Europe and in China with amazing musicians such as Peter Evans, Shane Endsley, Ohad Talmor, André Fernandes, Jesús Santandreu, Javier Subatín, Óscar Graça, João Paulo Esteves-da-Silva, Maria Villanueva and others.
Aside from that, I have also participated in professional theatre companies as an orchestra member and also in projects outside of the Jazz world.

I offer dynamic and customized lessons to my students, regardless of their age and proficiency , I try to communicate and share with them the necessary skills and tools needed to become a better musician, and also to cultivate a broader and simultaneously deeper understanding of music and art in general.

About Me

I am a Jazz Double Bass Player, Composer, Producer and Teacher from Portugal.
I was born in the beautiful Portuguese Capital of Lisbon and I have developed my music career mainly here but I have also in Spain, Germany, Italy, Poland, Serbia, Malta and China as a member of multiple amazing Jazz projects, with professional theatre companies and also with folk band "Kumpania Algazarra".
I have a passion for teaching because throughout my life I have had many wonderful teachers that made me a better person and artist with their lessons, so I feel that it is my turn to try and do the same to the next generation of musicians.

Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Performance from "Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa" - specialized in Double Bass.

I've been teaching electric bass for 4 years, along with the Music Theory that is both necessary and useful to becoming a good bass player. I attempt to focus on the students' own musical tastes as the basis for learning the technique and the theory. I teach everyone, regardless of their skill

If you love music and want to know more and do more, this is the class. We will use the piano as our main instrument and explore many different styles of music and develop your own skills as a musician. We will have theory topic along side a main piece to work on that will help deepen your understanding of how music works and explores the three big areas of Jazz Pop and Classical. The balance between the two here is flexible if you are already comfortable on the piano.

Composition starts as I write set exercises for you that we can work together on and start to piece together the different elements that go into composing music. Should you want to focus on one of these three elements more I am able to shift the balance to make a personalized experience.

I am a classical musician with over 15 years of professional experience, both in Portugal and abroad.

My main instrument is the Transverse Flute, but I also teach: the Piccolo, the Traverso and the Recorder.

I am available to teach students of all ages and levels, either at my Music Studio in Queluz or at the student's.
I also have a transverse flute for newbie students to try out.

As a teacher, the goal of each lesson is for the student to gradually feel more comfortable with their instrument, continually working on the relationship between the two.

To achieve this goal, we will work equally on the Technical and Musical components. Greater technical mastery of the instrument will allow students to express and develop their musicality as freely as possible.

Each student will have lessons adapted to his needs and objectives, being that the basic premise of my teaching technique is the pleasure of making music.

- Royal Conservatory of Brussels (Master in Music)
- Lisbon School of Music (License in Music)
- School of Music of the National Conservatory in Lisbon

ABOUT HOW TO TAKE CLASSES

My methodology is based on the student's interests, adapting to their preferred genres and supporting the student according to their goals, from those who want to be able to play an instrument as a hobby to those who want to train as a professional musician.

It doesn't matter what level you start at! My priority is to create an environment where you feel comfortable, set small challenges to make learning exciting and see your progress through these achievements. We will use a comprehensive approach where we will combine theory with practice from the beginning, so that you are able to understand in depth what you are playing.

My main goal is to share my passion for this art and help my students find and cultivate theirs!

Understanding music theory and composition is essential for musicians (whether performers or composers) of any genre and level. With this course, I hope to share my 10 years of experience in composition and music theory, as well as a great enjoyment for the field. I aim to exemplify the discussed theory through listening and (if applicable) playing examples, combining the established theories by discussing compositional parameters, making the playing of pieces and composing more accessible and organic.
I aim for a personalized experience within the framework of demand.
