As one of history's oldest forms of communication and musical expression, Drumming is an incredibly powerful and fulfilling skill to learn! Under the guidance of Uptown Drumming's Rob, students ranging from beginner to advanced receive a highly unique musical instruction, tailored to their specific goals and abilities.

Uptown Drumming's students are furnished with the fundamentals of drumming, from discussions about the role of drummers and drumming at different points in history and in different places around the
world, to general music theory and theory as it relates to the drum kit, to the skills and techniques needed to master this powerful and dynamic instrument. Theory and practical assignments will challenge
the student to put what they learn into practice as they harness their own creative mind to create, notate, and perform original pieces of their own. New skills are then enhanced as the student’s musical and technical skills are pushed to the next level through a specially designed, rigorous curriculum.

Students are always pushed to explore ways in which they can personalize their instrument and their playing technique; how they can utilize their skills in the world of Audio Production; and what they need to know and what they can expect from a career in the Music Industry.

About Me

Born in South Africa and raised in Oxford, UK, Rob began his career as a professional touring and recording musician at the age of sixteen. A member of a band, he has had the incredible privilege of touring the world and playing some of it’s most renowned stages, performing live on the UK’s biggest music television program, recording live sessions in the infamous Abbey Road studios for mainstream BBC Radio programs, being interviewed by top music journalists as well as performing on some of the BBC’s main prime-time radio and television political programs, and receiving a silver record, all before the age of 25. Now based in New York, Rob runs Uptown Drumming, providing world-class Music instruction and mentorship to a diverse range of students. Alongside a demanding schedule of session work, Rob also continues to write, record, produce and perform music with his band.

I am classically trained on Drumkit and Percussion and earned a Distinction in Performance from Trinity Guildhall. I have completed a number of Music courses both in the UK and the US, and I received my undergraduate BA Hons Art and Humanities degree at The Open University

I have been teaching adult beginners and intermediates to play the violin and viola for 10 years. The focus is very different. One person would like to find relaxation in playing the violin. Another would like to be able to play a certain piece because he likes it. A third has picked up the violin again after a long time.

I have had violin lessons for > 10 years and am currently studying viola at the Conservatory of Bolzano. I have 10 years of teaching experience.

The theory of everything tends to be really scary and music theory can be too. I am very keen to make music theory easy for everyone. For some people there is only one way to tackle the unmentionable but I believe there are many different approaches and one of them will click with you. It is simply finding out what is best for each person. Once we find the key we can unlock the problems that have puzzled you for ages.

Music theory needs to be more than a requirement, it needs to be the way to really appreciate the music you are playing. Certain aspects can also lead to additional practical skills such as improvisation which can be very useful as well as very enjoyable.
