About Me

Hi, I’m Matheus, a 28-year-old musician and producer from Brazil, based in Barcelona.

I grew up in Brazil where I graduated in Guitar from Bituca - University of Brazilian Music, studying under Latin Grammy winner Gilvan de Oliveira. I furthered my music studies at UFMG, one of Brazil's premier universities, before moving to Barcelona.

Here, with my best friend, I formed the duo DOCUS, which offered me a significant career leap. As part of DOCUS, I work as a songwriter and producer, performing and touring in Europe. We are currently releasing our debut album "Infinite," available on all major streaming platforms. We've also had the honor of opening for Maná at venues like Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona and Wizink Center in Madrid.

Teaching music is a passion for me. I love getting to know new people, discovering and learning new music and cultures. Before moving to Europe, I spent two years teaching guitar to teenage groups in public schools for vulnerable communities in Brazil. This experience helped me develop a teaching method that is accessible to everyone. Watching my students' joy and gratitude as they learned to play and we made music together was incredibly inspiring and rewarding.

In Brazil, music is a very important communal experience. Everyone knows how to play a bit, everyone loves to sing (even if terribly bad!), and it's common for friends and family to often gather anywhere to play, sing, and have fun. This spirit of integration and shared happiness is the most important role I see for music in society. It’s about much more than just performing; it’s about bringing people together.

The teaching philosophy is adapted to the level of each individual, according to the pace of work and motivation.

For example, for beginners: Technique of the plectrum or fingers, coordination and correction of the right and left hand. Learning basic chords, simple themes, simple rhythms, reading tablatures (...).

For intermediaries: development of rhythm, construction of chords, writing of tablatures, basic notions of harmony (...).

Depending on your goals, you can learn, if you wish, to play 60 to 80% of current music from the first lessons, which often use the same chords and the same techniques. The objectives take into consideration the following points:

I firmly believe in the importance of knowing how to read music and this is exactly what I teach first, obviously adapting the method to the age of my students: knowing how to read music is knowing one more language, which, if learned well, won’t ever be forgotten (like riding a bicycle!) and it is an invaluable wealth. Starting from that point I teach the position of the hand, the arm and the whole body at the piano, the fundamentals of the piano technique (giving great importance to the percussive movement of the finger and the distribution of weight), the understanding of musical language, the expression of the personality through the keyboard, the search for touch and knowledge of piano repertoire.

Would you classify improvisation as composition or performance? Well actually it is both! When you improvise you are composing music on the spot, performing what you have made up at the same time as you have composed it.

For many people improvisation is a scary word and having to improvise in a group or band is an alarming prospect. However, this really does not need to be the case. As long as you have a basic knowledge of how to play your instrument you will be able to improvise. Once you know the principle of how chords are formed you will soon be improvising with ease.

The key to success is understanding chords. Once you know how chords are formed and know what notes make up a few chords you will be well on your way towards being able to improvise. We will, therefore, start by ensuring a firm knowledge of certain chords. After this we will progress to improvising a simple melody over the top of these chords. The next stage is to start using notes that are not in the chord. The process is then open ended with emphasis on developing the melody.

If you play a keyboard instrument you will be able to improvise your own pieces and be able to entertain your friends at a moments notice. On the other hand if you play in a band or a group you will be well equipped to do a real 'jam' session.

Whether you play a single line instrument (flute, saxophone, trumpet, violin etc.) or keyboard instruments, this class is for you.

I am a professional musician and have been teaching students of all ages for over 20 years. My experience as a teacher and my pursuit of self-improvement as a musician have led me to develop an effective method that I have already tested with over a hundred students.
Throughout my career I had the satisfaction of studying with great masters of different specialties or styles, each one emphasizing different aspects of flamenco, classical or modern guitar and each one has given me their approach (technique, rhythms, accompaniment, harmony, etc.), which has led me after years of study and compilation to take the best from each one to develop my method.

This class is designed for conservatory students, private candidates and advanced musicians who need solid guidance in harmony, counterpoint and fugue, especially in preparation for exams and auditions.

We work on written exercises, stylistic correction and analytical understanding, with a clear method and step-by-step feedback.
