Assalam-o-alaikum! I'm Asghar, an Urdu teacher from Pakistan with more than 20 years of classroom experience. I am a Lecturer in Urdu at a government postgraduate college in Punjab. I hold an MA and an MPhil in Urdu, and I'm a PhD candidate in Urdu. I also founded Urdu in Translation, an online library of Urdu classics with Roman Urdu and English side by side, and I have translated three books of literary theory into Urdu.

Beginners and intermediate learners: structure first, then use. Each lesson gives you one sentence pattern, the words you need for it, and lots of speaking practice. You speak from lesson one. If you want to read too, an eight-lesson script course takes you through the Urdu letters step by step.

Advanced learners: we read a ghazal, a story or a letter together. First the form, then the meaning, tone and culture behind it. You leave each lesson able to explain a couplet of Ghalib, Iqbal or Faiz in your own words.

Heritage learners who understand some Urdu but want to speak and read with confidence are very welcome. Every lesson ends with short homework and audio you can replay. In your first lesson we find your level, talk about your goal (family, travel, exams, poetry), and I give you a plan for your first month.

Urdu started developing in North India around Delhi in the 12th century. It was based on the language spoken in the area around Delhi and was heavily influenced by Arabic and Persian as well as Turkish.
Urdu originates from Hindi, sometimes referred to as the 'sister' language of Urdu due to its grammatical basis. However, Hindi is written in 'Devanagari', a script similar to Sanskrit, and its vocabulary is influenced more by Sanskrit than by Persian and Arabic.
