I am based in Berlin and teach online only, so we can work together wherever you are. I studied and lived in Japan for five years and completed my bachelor's degree there, and I hold a BA and an MA in Japanese language and culture. Alongside teaching I work as a Japanese translator and interpreter. I read at the level of an educated adult reader, the full jouyou set. Teaching privately, full time, since 2021.

I learned Japanese as a European, from the outside, so I know where you are going to get stuck, usually before it happens. A native speaker knows the right answer. I know why you got it wrong, and I can explain it in a language you already speak. That matters most in the first year, which is where almost everyone gives up.

Every student gets a plan built around their goal, not a textbook we work through page by page. I write my own materials. Between lessons you get one short, realistic assignment. Beginners from zero, hiragana and katakana, grammar rebuilt from the ground up, JLPT preparation, conversation, reading, Japanese for work.
