Cello Lessons for All Levels — Beginners to Advanced

Cello lessons for students of all ages and levels, from complete beginners to more advanced players.

For beginners, we focus on developing a solid foundation in posture, bow technique, left-hand position, intonation, rhythm, music reading, and sound production, while learning enjoyable pieces from the start.

For intermediate and advanced students, lessons can be tailored to their individual goals, with a focus on developing technique, musical expression, interpretation, tone production, and performance skills. We can work on repertoire, auditions, competitions, examinations, or simply on becoming a more confident and expressive musician.

Every lesson is adapted to the student's level, interests, and personal musical goals.
Extra information
A one-time introductory cello lesson for complete beginners of any age. Students will get to discover the cello, learn the basics of posture, how to hold the bow and instrument, and try playing their first sounds and simple exercises.
For this first lesson, students are welcome to try my cello. However, for continued lessons, it is preferred that students have their own cello so they can practise between lessons and make consistent progress.
The lesson will be relaxed, encouraging, and adapted to the student's individual pace.

About Me
I have been playing the cello since I was ten years old, and since discovering the instrument it has become a central part of my life. I started playing in orchestras at the age of 13 through youth orchestra projects, and since then I have had the opportunity to perform with many of South Africa’s major orchestras, including the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Free State Symphony Orchestra and KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra. I have also performed as a soloist with the Gauteng Philharmonic Orchestra and Free State Symphony Orchestra, while taking part in competitions and receiving prizes in several national competitions. Chamber music has also been an important part of my development, particularly through my participation in the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival, where I had the opportunity to work with and perform alongside experienced musicians. During my studies in Bloemfontein, I studied at the Odeion School of Music and was involved in orchestral, chamber and educational projects, including teaching cello and participating in music outreach programmes for children. I am now completing my Master’s studies in Belgium under David Cohen and have already been involved in major orchestral projects both at my school and outside of it, including serving as principal cellist. Through all of these experiences, I have discovered that orchestral playing is where I feel most at home, and I am extremely passionate about continuing to play, learn from different musicians and gain as much professional orchestral experience as possible.
Education
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in General Music Performance, with cello as my principal instrument, which I completed in South Africa. I am currently completing a Master’s degree in Cello Performance in Belgium, studying under David Cohen, Principal Cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra.
Experience / Qualifications
I have been playing cello since the age of 10 and have been involved in orchestral playing since the age of 13. I was Third Cellist of the Free State Symphony Orchestra for three years and performed with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra for one year, as well as with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra. I have performed as a soloist with the Gauteng Philharmonic Orchestra and Free State Symphony Orchestra, and have participated in numerous youth and professional orchestra projects. I won the Victoria K. Bennett Competition and the NEA Competition and was a semifinalist in the National Youth Music Competition. I have extensive chamber-music experience, including participation in the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival and various chamber-music projects. I am currently completing my Master’s degree in Belgium under David Cohen and hold the position of Principal Cellist at my institution.
