I offer chess lessons for children and adults, from complete beginners to intermediate players who want to improve their game.

I have more than 10 years of competitive chess experience, with a FIDE rating of around 1825, an ECF rating of around 2013 and a Lichess rating of around 2300. My tournament results include 1st place at the Scarborough Chess Congress, 5th place in the Turkish U16 Championship and 2nd place in the Turkish University Chess Championship.

I also have previous experience teaching chess to children in both individual and group lessons.

Lessons can be adapted to your level and goals. Depending on what you need, we can work on tactics, calculation, strategy, openings, endgames, analysing your own games and improving your overall decision-making.

For beginners, I focus on building a strong understanding of the game without making the lessons too complicated. For more experienced players, we can identify weaknesses in your games and work on them with practical exercises and game analysis.

My aim is to keep the lessons enjoyable, practical and suited to each student rather than following the same programme for everyone.

My three main areas of expertise (not necessarily in this order):

- Chess: I teach chess to beginners and intermediate players up to ELO 1800 or ECF 1700, working on the tactical and strategic aspects of openings, middle games and endgames.. "chess is life in miniature"!

- Fitness / Running / Triathlon: I coach people who want to get fitter and generally incorporate any endurance activity into a health(ier) lifestyle. I am a dedicated coach who has competed in several marathons and Ironman races (also qualified for the Ironman World Championship). I focus on nutrition, stress and sleep as well for a holistic approach.

- Languages: I specialize in tutoring Italian and Spanish; my style is to keep students challenged and motivated through simple classes and practical exercises (pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary).. I'm a demanding teacher but will guide you in a fun and interactive way.

Chess is a great game for having fun and sharpening the mind. Suitable for all ages, I offer classes for beginners to advanced players from ages of 5 upwards. As an online player myself with a blitz rating of 2440, I find the study and play of chess endlessly rewarding and hope that some of my passion can rub off on you. Chess is an engaging strategy game that supports and strengthens different cognitive fields; pattern recognition, calculation, planning and problem solving, and memory. Chess practice has been identified as a protective factor against dementia by health researchers, and it can provide a distinct form of mental engagement for those who haven't played before. Beyond its health and cognitive benefits, chess is fun! It is engaging and easy to learn, but hard to master. If you are interested in learning the fundamentals of chess, and developing a sense of strategy, I can teach online or in person. Hi, I'm Saiya! I have been playing competitive chess my whole life. As a child, I played and worked at chess for many years before finally having a breakthrough as a teenager, and I have continued to improve, even into my thirties as a PhD student with little spare time. As an adult, I have built community in chess and started giving lessons to people I met. I have encountered many different teaching techniques over the years, and have had the opportunity to see what works and what doesn't.

All too many chess coaches rely on students to identify their own strengths and weaknesses and propose their own lesson plans. Of course, students are not always best positioned to identify their own strengths and weaknesses, and part of the function of a coach should be to assess the student and help them develop a study plan.

I have five years of experience teaching linguistics at the university level, and I am accustomed to making lesson plans and using proven pedagogical techniques. As a coach, I will identify your strengths and weaknesses based on seeing your games and hearing your thought process. I will then create study plans consisting of games, puzzles, and interesting positions specifically tailored for you.
