Xiao & Dizi Lessons with a Performer, Teacher and Sound Designer
I'm a xiao and dizi player, teacher and sound designer based in Taiwan, with over 20 years of teaching experience. I lived and studied in France, so I know how to explain this music clearly to students who didn't grow up with it, in English or French.
With my background in sound design and acoustics, I can help you understand why your tone is airy or unstable, or why you run out of breath, and how to fix it, not just "practice more."
The dizi has a clear, bright tone, used in traditional music, theater, folk melodies and film and game soundtracks. The xiao has a deeper, more intimate sound, ideal for slow melodies, lyrical phrasing and meditative music.
WHO IT'S FOR
- Complete beginners
- Wind players who want to explore a new instrument and sound world
- Fans of Chinese dramas, period games and East Asian culture
- Anyone drawn to meditative, lyrical music
WHAT WE WORK ON
- Posture, basic technique, breath, tone production and sound control
- Dizi membrane: how to paste and adjust it
- Ornamentation, phrasing and expressive details
- Numbered notation (jianpu) and/or staff notation
- Listening to and understanding the style behind the music
DIRECTORY (EXAMPLES)
- Dizi: 《牧民新歌》 Mu Min Xin Ge (New Song of the Herdsmen) · 《喜相逢》 Xi Xiang Feng (Happy Reunion) · 《姑蘇行》 Gu Su (Flight of the Partridge)
- Xiao: 《妝台秋思》 Zhuang Tai Qiu Si (Autumn Thoughts at the Dressing Table) · 《梅花三弄》 Mei Hua San Nong (Three Variations on Plum Blossom)
- Beginner favorite: 《茉莉花》 Mo Li Hua (Jasmine Flower)
- Taiwanese and Hakka folk melodies
- Themes from dramas and games, or pieces of your choice
ARRANGEMENTS ON REQUEST
Have a piece in mind that isn't in the usual repertoire? I can adapt it to your request, write out the score (numbered or staff notation) and teach it to you. For example, I have adapted music from a Chinese period drama.
YOUR FIRST LESSON
You'll learn to hold the instrument properly, produce a clear sound, and hear what good breath support feels like. You'll leave with a short melody and a simple practice plan.
AFTER FOUR LESSONS
You'll play stable, clean notes across the first octave, perform a short folk melody, use one or two basic ornaments, read basic notation and understand how the dizi membrane works. (On xiao, which takes longer to sound reliably, the goal is steady notes and a slow phrase.) Students with wind experience often move faster.
FLUTES FROM TAIWAN
Good bamboo flutes are hard to find outside Asia, and quality varies widely. I can choose a flute for you in Taiwan and ship it to you. We'll decide the key and budget together based on your level and how you want to use it.
SCHEDULING
I'm in Taiwan (UTC+8) and can teach at almost any hour with advance booking. Tell me what works in your local time. Typical slots:
- Europe: weekend mornings to early afternoon, and weekends. Evenings on request.
- US & Canada, East Coast: weekend evenings and weekend mornings.
- US & Canada, West Coast: weekend evenings and weekend afternoons.
- Asia & Oceania: almost any time.
Lessons are online, in English or French. New students: send me a message with your goals and your local time zone, and we'll set up your first lesson.

I am a xiao and dizi player, teacher and sound designer, based in Taiwan, with over 20 years of teaching experience. I lived and studied in France: I can therefore explain this music to students who did not grow up with it, in French or English.
Thanks to my training in sound design and acoustics, I help you understand why your sound is hissy or unstable, or why you lack breath, and how to remedy it, beyond simply "you need to work harder".
The dizi has a clear, bright timbre, used in traditional music, theater, folk melodies, and film and game soundtracks. The xiao has a deeper, more intimate sound, ideal for slow melodies, lyrical phrasing, and meditative repertoires.

About Me
Bonjour,

Hello,
I'm Hua-Yen, a dizi and xiao player (Chinese bamboo flutes, transverse and end-blown) and sound designer based in Taiwan. I've been teaching since I was 15, so for over 20 years, in both private and group lessons.
I lived and studied in France (Master's in Sound Design at TALM Le Mans), so I know how to explain this music to students who didn't grow up with it, in English or French.
Between concerts, popular-music recordings and sound design (in 2018, for a video game studio in Taiwan: soundtracks, sound effects, recording, mixing), I approach the instrument through both music and sound: breath, tone, intonation.
Every lesson is built around your level and your goals, and I'd love to exchange about our cultures along the way.
Send me a message with your goals and your local time zone, and I'll get back to you soon.
