About Me

Bert began taking his piano studies seriously when he was admitted to the Art High School of East Flanders (Muda) in 2017, where he successfully graduated in 2020 under the guidance of Dorotea Haers. He was also given the opportunity to pursue an additional discipline there, where he could pursue his ambition for composition under the guidance of Simon De Poorter. This led to him being selected twice for “THE TIMES” (2019, 2020 editions), a forum for young composers where the “HERMESensemble” rehearses the selected work during open rehearsals, performs it in a concert at AMUZ, and where he was coached by Bram van Camp, resulting in professional recordings. In 2021, he also participated in the Nadar Summer Academy, where he further developed his compositional skills under the guidance of Daan Janssens and performed various contemporary works.

As a classical pianist, he obtained his Master's degree with highest distinction (2026) under Daan Vandewalle at the KASK Conservatory in Ghent with a complete performance of the piano marathon *Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant Jésus* by O. Messiaen. During his Master's studies, the focus was on Messiaen, both in solo works (Vingt Regards, Oiseaux Exotiques) and in chamber music settings (Harawi, Visions de l'Amen), as well as on a theoretical and biographical level. The works of C. Ives and the 20th-century Russian avant-garde are also close to his heart. With this repertoire, he has attended masterclasses on several occasions with, among others, Ralph van Raat, Boyan Vodenitcharov, and Jiaxin Min.

At KASK, he is in close contact with the composition class, where he provides fresh work for premieres and recordings every semester. In the summers of 2023 and 2025, he participated in “The Exploratory: Venice New Music Courses”, where he took masterclasses from Nicholas Isherwood, Abbie Conant, and Joëlle Léandre, among others. From 2026 onwards, he will further develop his specialization in contemporary music through the Manama track, under the coaching of Joris Blanckaert and Tom de Cock.

Since autumn 2026, he has been on the board of Shapovalov VZW, where he hosts a regular radio program about classical music on UrgentFM and produces a monthly podcast about 20th- and 21st-century music.
