Learning how to play the piano is not only musically enriching as it is one of the easier instruments to pick up if you are new to music, giving you a solid base of musical understanding, but also will boost your confidence in general being able to recognise pitches with multiple voicings as we work up the grades.

I adopt a goal-oriented teaching style:
- we will work through ABRSM grades -- breaking down the work needed to master all the way from scales to exam pieces to aural to sight reading.

About Me
I have a background in MSci Pharmacology with Professional Placement Year with First-Class Honours from KCL, worked at the University of Oxford. I am native Cantonese, proficient in Mandarin and English (~native) - both spoken and written.

Currently teaching the piano, the flute, and phonics in my spare time:) I enjoy interacting with people from various backgrounds. I have a passion for music and I am keen to transfer my musical skills, techniques, and understanding to my students. More importantly, I really enjoy guiding and empowering my students in their pursuits with a positive learning attitude, in so doing also boost their confidence.

I completed the Music Theory Grade 5 exam at age 10. Attained ABRSM Grade 8 for the piano and double bass at ages 11 and 15. Attained LTCL for flute at age 14. I played in both woodwind and strings orchestras, also participated in various local and overseas competitions throughout my school years in HK.

In terms of work experience, I have worked in various cities, London, Oxford, Shanghai, Hong Kong (hometown) using various languages. Naturally, I have an upbeat, cheerful, enthusiastic personality. Having worked at various startups, I also encourage an empowering and proactive leadership/teaching style. I am flexible, comfortable, and versatile. My teaching will be dependent on the student's needs -- I believe in systematic teaching but malleability is also important depending on the student's potential and character.

Nailing pronunciation is important in learning a language. For complete beginners, the things I'll teach you the following in chronological order:
- basics of the sounding of the flute, assemble/disassemble the flute
- tone development: posture, embouchure, breathing, articulation
- basic rhythmic training
- fingerings for simple notes e.g. "G", "A", "B"
- other notes ("F", "Bb"; "E", "D", "C")
- understanding the balance
- sightreading simple solo, duet pieces
- more advanced notes
- pitch (sharp/flat)
- tone color

Marat
My name is Marat and I am a London-based pianist, musicologist and composer with more than 20 years of experience. I am also a dedicated and experienced piano, composition, music theory and music technology tutor offering excellent and in-depth tuition for any age or ability. I have been teaching extensively in schools and privately, and giving lectures at universities. I would be happy to share my passion and enthusiasm for music with you!

My musical path started at Moscow Jurgenson Music School in Russia at the age of 7 where I took my first piano and music theory lessons. After 8 years of full-time studying I graduated with distinction. In 2015, I graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London specialising in classical and contemporary performance (under Andrew Zolinsky) and music education. Recently, I have completed my masters programme at Goldsmiths, University of London specialising in contemporary musicology (under Keith Potter) and music management.

Since 2012, I have been performing and premiering contemporary classical music solo or with ensembles at various venues and events, including IKLECTIK, Arebyte Gallery, Sound Festival, Southbank Centre, Cheltenham Music Festival and Teatro Baltazar Dias (Madeira, Portugal). I am a core member of the New Maker Ensemble, a group dedicated to experimenting with various art forms of new music and performance art. I regularly write articles and album reviews about new music. I have given lectures and presentations on new music at various conferences and events, including the Gnesin Contemporary Music Week 2020, 2021 and 2022, the Gnesin Academy and ZIL Culture Centre. And I even have my own podcast about new music.

Tuition is open for both online and in-person classes. All ages and abilities welcome: from age 5 to adult learners, beginner to advanced. I teach from my flat in Surrey Quays, but can also travel to my students, in which case a travel fee will be added to the standard rates. I currently offer:
