Bernadette - experienced and accredited cello teacher in Aix centre-ville. 5 minute walk from La Rotonde.

After 25 years of practice and 18 years as a cello teacher in various Australian and UK schools as well as privately (since 2005), I can teach either in English or in French.

With my experience of teaching and sharing my passion for the cello,
I offer lessons tailored to individual needs:
-Ages: 5 years to adult
-Beginners to advanced
-Prep exams, conservatory/school admissions, auditions, competitions
-Lessons for fun or leisure
-Perfecting all aspects of technique
-Revisiting or starting the basics
-Adaptable to all levels, all learning styles, all tastes, using a variety of methods.

I have completed both a Master's and Bachelor of Performance (Violoncello) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Australia, (completed in 2014), where I also studied String Pedagogy and Music Theory (Solfege, Harmony and Aural Perception (dictation etc.), Music History alongside solo, chamber music and ensemble and orchestral studies). I was also a member of the Australian Youth Orchestra (notably Chamber Players in Sydney and AYO Momentum Ensemble National Tours), and since joined professional orchestras such as the Auckland Philharmonia (New Zealand) and the international Southbank Sinfonia in London UK, (currently known as the Sinfonia Smith Square Orchestra).

I am now based in Aix-en-Provence where I am perfecting my French!

I currently work around Aix-Marseille as a professional cellist: as a member of the Ensemble Giocoso, of the Symphonia Meditéranée (Symphonia 13), and as a substitute cellist with the Opéra de Marseille for both operas and symphonic concerts. I also play chamber music concerts in duo, trios, etc, with piano, violin and other instrumentalists around Aix.

I would be happy to provide you with my full resumé and/or recordings to my playing if you so desire.
Extra information
Important Information:

My fees:
30 minutes : 25€
45 minutes : 30€
1 hour : 40€
1 hr 15 : 50€
1 hr 30 : 60€

I only give lessons at my domicile in the centre of Aix (5 mins from La Rotonde). I do not travel to teaching venues outside of my location.

Please note that there are 3 flights of stairs at the entry to my location and unfortunately there is no elevator.

I only give video-lessons to pre-existing students who are unwell or travelling temporarily and I would not recommend this approach long-term.

Students must have their own cello. Let me know if you need recommendations for contact information of luthiers, where you can buy or hire a cello.

Best recommended lesson times: 30-minute lessons are best for very young children, according to their concentration and physical abilities. Then from about 7 years old, or otherwise from 3rd or 4th grade in cello, hourly lessons would be necessary, or 45 minutes for a brief transitional period if necessary.
For all adults including debutants, I would recommend hourly lessons.

Please note, I have a 24-hour cancellation policy, where any missed lesson with less than 24 hours' notice is still payable.

Thank you for your comprehension :)

*Please also note:

1. I am currently available to take on new students, however sometimes my schedule can often and very quickly become totally booked up, especially towards Christmas or around May-June. If that becomes the case, I'll let you know and you can tell me if you'd like to go on the waiting list for a couple of months, or if you're lucky I may have an opening quite soon...

2. SEPTEMBER 2026: I haven't yet filled out my availabilities online here for La Rentrée 2026 (Back to School 2026). It is still up in the air depending on my orchestral schedules as well as my pre-existing students' schedules, who I like to give first preference to at the start of the school year.
From the start of September I will then open up preferences for certain days/time-slots to new students.
I will be able to give new students unfixed time-slots before that, if you want to start earlier anyway.

Please don't hesitate to contact me for any questions at all.

Looking forward to working with you if you so choose, and I wish you a happy cello journey!!

Cheers,
Bernadette ;)
