Specializing in culturally diverse educational contexts, I have lived and taught in Latin America (Ecuador and Brazil), the United States, Spain, and Dutch-speaking Belgium. These experiences have allowed me to reach a near-native level in Portuguese, Spanish, English, and Dutch. I also studied Journalism, while I suggest you learn Portuguese from subjects that interest you - always with a very solid grammatical basis. It's great fun to learn a language - I promise you. Portuguese is part of the family of Latin languages, including Ibero-Romance languages, such as Spanish (or "Castilian"), Catalan and Galician. His accent is closer to Catalan and Galician (which shares the same roots) and the pronunciation of certain words has some peculiarities: the letter ç (with the cedilla) is used before the "a", the "o" and the "u" (as in French); the circumflex accent is used on the vowels for the pronunciation of the closed vowels ("â" as Câmara, "ê" as pêssego - and as "summer" - and "ô" as avô - and as "eau"); the acute accent (') is used for the pronunciation of open vowels (the grave accent is rarely used), such as' á' (água), 'é' (p- or 'head') and 'ó' ( as mó); the tilde (~) is used on the letters ã (as mãe or pão) and õ (as põe) to indicate a nasal pronunciation of these vowels; Portuguese uses many oral diphthongs, such as "ai" (pai), "ei" (as lei), "oi" (as boi), "ui" (as Rui), and "iu" (as viu); the letter "s" is pronounced like "ch" at the end of the words (as francés or pessoas) or before a consonant (as estar or esperança). When the letter "s" is at the beginning of the words (like sapo) or in case of double consonant (like passado), it is pronounced like the French word "sac". If the letter "s" is between two vowels (like casa) it is pronounced like the letter "z" (like "zero"). Portuguese has two official standards: the Portuguese standard and the Brazilian standard (no, the "Brazilian" does not exist!). Each official standard has differences in emphasis (more open in Brazil than in Portugal), vocabulary and some syntactic structures. In addition to these two official standards, Portuguese also has a great variety of accents and a great wealth of vocabulary, especially in Portuguese-speaking African countries, as well as in Asia or Oceania.

I’m Ryan — and yes, in Portuguese it sounds like “LION,” just swap the LI for a HI. 😊 I’m a PhD language educator with over a decade of experience teaching Spanish, Portuguese, and Academic English at every level — from absolute beginners to advanced university students and professionals. I earned my Ph.D. in Latin American Literature and Culture from the University of Texas at Austin, one of the leading institutions for language pedagogy in the U.S. Since 2024, I have held a position as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. I’ve taught at major universities including the University of Michigan, University of Texas-Austin, Villanova, and Thomas Jefferson University. My experience includes everything from foundational grammar and conversation courses to advanced writing, medical Spanish, Portuguese for Spanish speakers, and culturally focused seminars on race, media, and society in the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world. Beyond the classroom, I’ve worked extensively as a professional interpreter and translator in Spanish and Portuguese, supporting migrants, asylum seekers, educators, and public institutions. I’ve also lived and worked across South America and bring real-world cultural experience into every lesson. My name is Nicolas, and I am a Brazilian Portuguese teacher with eight years of teaching experience. I have been speaking Portuguese for about ten years now. I learned the language while living in Brazil for several long periods, both for study and work. I am currently living there again. Having also gone through the process of learning to speak this language, I am well aware of the different stages my students go through. This helps a lot. My lessons are tailor-made to achieve personal goals and are adapted to the specific needs of each student. Practice is prioritized throughout the learning process in order to gain autonomy as quickly as possible. Grammar is also covered, depending on the student's level. This course is aimed at: - Beginners (basics, conversation, travel); - Intermediate/advanced learners (improvement, exam preparation); - Professionals (business Portuguese, interview preparation).
