Many are already aware of the uniqueness of Italy — its rich history, beautiful architecture, and delicious food make it one of the world’s most sought-after tourist destinations. But perhaps even more intriguing is the Italian language itself. Italian is the 5th most studied language in the US, the official language of classical music, with more than 85 million speakers globally. Based on your requirements, in this class you will learn how to speak the language fluently as a local, combined with a detailed and practical focus on the grammar and the lexicon.

What could be better than learning Italian from a native speaker? I am an Italian living in Leiden since 2014. I have a strong background in Italian grammar and enjoy discussing a wide range of topics. I can help you prepare for language certifications, as well as improve your pronunciation and your written and spoken Italian.

Latin is fascinating and, despite its reputation of being a dead language, it can still be useful today. However, being unique, it is not always easy to understand its grammar and syntax and translating from Latin can be hard. Having studied it since when I was thirteen and with two cum-laude degrees in Classics, I know Latin deeply. Moreover, I have experience in giving classes to high school students, therefore I am aware of its difficulties and I know how to tackle possible hurdles in the most appropriate way for each student. Apart from Latin, I am an Italian native speaker, trained in Italian language and culture. If you want to strengthen or practice your Italian, I am the right person! Feel free to contact me if you need help in learning/practicing these two beautiful languages!

Private tutoring classes for young children, teenagers, adults and seniors who would like to: > Learn Italian, French and/or English from scratch > Do homework with the support of a tutor > Improve and perfect their language skills (speaking, writing, listening and reading) > Prepare for language certifications such as PET, FIRST, TOEFL, DELF, admission exams... > Practice their skills in fun conversations and/or for special occasions About Francesca: I graduated as a translator and interpreter from the University of Geneva (Switzerland) and I lived in different countries where I perfected my accent and pronunciation and I also learnt about the local culture (specifically Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany, Belgium, UK, the US). I love foreign languages and cultures and my goal is to pass this enthusiasm on to my students as they also learn "boring" grammar rules. For me it's all about helping you find a method of language learning that makes it easy for you to remember new words and correct grammar. Looking forward to hearing from you!

As an Italian native speaker, I would like to focus not only on grammar and formal aspects of the language, but also on the cultural context in which phrases are used and coversation. My classes will be flexible and adaptable to the student's needs.

I am an Italian native speaker with a bachelor in Italian Literature and Linguistics. In Italy, I usually teach English to high school students, or adults who want to improve their skills with this language. Usually, I tend to use a non-academic approach, by focusing on the student's interests and make him/her applying the language to their everyday life, instead of simply learning the grammar rules by heart. In my opinion, learning a new language should be fun and easy, nothing too stressful. What you will get from is a new positive and funny way to learn a foreign language such as Italian or English.

Ciao! I have been teaching Italian for the past sixteen years, privately and at language schools including La Scuola Italiana del Greenwich Village in New York and ItalCultura, the school of the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago. During our first two lessons, I’ll make sure you have the tools to pronounce and recognize all the sounds of Italian. This step is essential, and it makes everything that comes afterwards much easier. When I teach, I try to avoid all the things I hated as a language student. My terrifying French teacher in middle school made us repeat the same fake dialogue from a really bad textbook ad nauseam, over and over and over again. Some of it is still carved into my brain: “Bonjour, je m’appelle Richard Drapeau, je viens du Canada, je suis Canadien...” So we won’t do that. We’ll use real songs and real literature. We’ll have real conversations, tell stories, improvise, and, when possible, go on “talking walks.” I find that when you engage more of your senses, it becomes easier to relax, stay curious, and actually remember new words. I customize my materials around your interests, needs, and desired pace. If you love cinema, we can work with films. If you’re interested in literature, politics, food, art, history, or simply being able to have a proper conversation when you’re in Italy, that can become part of the class. And because you’re learning with a native Italian, you’ll also learn about Italian culture, history, habits, gestures, contradictions, and ways of thinking. Language is never just a pile of grammar rules. I speak several languages myself, so I know both how exciting and how painfully tedious learning one can be. My aim is to give you a strong foundation without draining all the life out of it. I hold a degree in Lingue e Letterature Straniere (Foreign Languages and Literatures) from Università Roma Tre and a Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media from Columbia College Chicago. I wrote my university thesis on translating a long epic poem by W. H. Auden, and at one point I tried to ride a horse across America.
