There are 2 main components to essay writing in English literature exams. The first is being able to look at the big picture, what does a novel/play/poem embody in terms of themes, movements and context. The second is being able to analyse the small details, this is where you develop your personalised argument through picking examples that stand out to you and interpreting them in your own style.
This class is designed to help students find their own voice when it comes to interpreting literature. Unlike many subjects English exams aren’t gearing students towards yes or no answers, it’s designed to develop our critical thinking skills. The ability to analyse stories, as well as storytelling, teaches us about the world we live in and the people it’s filled with.
