I remember one of my first teachers saying "An actor should be a blank canvas." And this made sense at first. So I went up on our small stage to do a monologue and it was terrible. My teacher said, "Kamil, you didn't really do anything." "Well, yeah? I am a blank canvas" As a neurodiverse person, I am overanalytical, literal, incredibly anxious and have difficulty speaking with full confidence. However, my Master's level education from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School has given me a toolkit where I can work towards placing my self-doubt and uncertainty behind 'The Work.' The Work is the hours you've spent in the text, the pencil markings in the script, the crinkled pages from taking it in and out of your backpack. It's the objective truth that you can rely on when your self-awareness doesn't want you to be the character, when you can feel an audience member looking at you, when the person behind the camera laughs at something you didn't inherently think was funny. It's your character's lifesaver. For those that may require more structure when they receive text, I can help you deconstruct that overwhelming building into its key components. Whether it's from a play you've been newly cast in, a voiceover script you can't wrap your head around, or just a simple self-tape, we can work to break down text that lets BE that blank canvas on the day, but you know what paints you've used, what strokes you can utilise, you know the feel of the paintbrush from all the canvases you've practised on. Also, it's a good way to memorise lines. And that's just a nice bonus.

Aside from the plays themselves, it is important to understand the wider world of theatre. We will look at the plays of Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet and Theatre of the Absurd for Dario Fo. The history of Theatre censorship and the Royal Court Theatre is crucial to understanding Edward Bond's Saved. This class will give you the opportunity to explore these complex texts with a practising playwright, and the expanded knowledge of these plays will give you that edge when it comes to the exam.

This class explores Laban fundamentals to develop movement ability and application, providing an understanding of the influential movement system and how it can enhance your physicality and performance. We can work on a full understanding of the Laban system or actor movement coaching for specific work. There are many considerations for how one performs - from comprehensive theory and how it manifests to the physical connection between the body and mind. In our lessons we will take an individualised approach; some actors struggle with confidence, others with emotional connections, most with sincere relaxation. For the more cerebral actors, understanding the theory behind the motive helps internalise its necessity. Simplicity is a great form, but only when assumed knowingly. As for myself, I have 11 years' experience in the field - 7 professionally - spanning theatre, commercials, musical theatre, and dance. I've performed in numerous theatres across the UK (as well as Cyprus) and have been featured in a number of international commercials.
