This workshop is designed for people who are intrigued by Electronic Music at beginner’s level.
The contents and approach of this Workshop are, overall, not too technical yet, and rather more directed to enlighten curious learners about the potential career opportunities in the music scene. If you are considering following your dream of becoming an electronic music artist, but are not sure how to start, this Workshop is for you!
Divided in 3 sessions, it proposes a raw and honest dive into the key factors
and tools to consider when contemplating an artistic career in the electronic music scene.
It starts by making a recap on Electronic music’s history, the main agents in the scene, and the importance of the various roles within this ecosystem.
Chapter 1 (first session) also oversees the main differences between a DJ, a Music Producer and a Live act performer, their distinct practices,
examples of the gear they use, and the unique daily dynamics they face.
In the second chapter (session 2), it zooms in on what is needed to get started in Music Production
(beginner level). Besides some tools and relevant concepts on this matter, session 2 will explore a DAW (music production software), and go through the basics of how to use it to start
the first song.
If the session is provided IRL, some electronic music machines will be available onsite to touch, to play and to
record using Ableton Live Suite 11.
The public will be invited to touch the mixer and get a feeling of what each button does; will have the chance to interact with the machines, eventually record their own composition, and
understand how to start a basic structure of a song on Ableton.
In case session 2 is provided URL, students may use their own gear at home in case they have it; if not, they can simply follow the flow as we do some exercises sharing the screen live.
We will not dive too deep into mixing techniques here yet, nor will we finish the workshop with everything figured out - which would be confusing for beginner level. We will rather explain, in a nutshel what it means to be an artist in this scene, how to start making music, and which tools exist.
The Workshop finishes on session 3 with a few exercises and practical tools, but also an uplifting reflection, meant to empower the visitor pursue their own path:
“Which one of these activities resonates more with my unique personality?"
"Now that I have a clue on the work that each one of them imply, which one is the best for me to step forward, and eventually kickstart my own career?"
"How can I positively contribute to this
ecosystem, and creatively feed into it?”
"What should I buy in order to start my own, personal music path?"
If you’re fond of electronic music, and willing to contribute to it - but not sure where to start from -, this Introduction to Electronic Music Workshop is for you.
