Alternative Piano Lessons: Learn by ear and have fun!

I teach Piano in a fun, laid-back and casual way, always structuring my lessons around the students' needs and tastes. Please note: I specifically do not teach piano with notations or scores of any sort.

My method of teaching is based on playing by ear, with emphasis on the music and the joy in playing it, rather than the theory. Notation is great and theory is important - I studied these myself; however, I have found that learning an instrument by ear is a far deeper, enjoyable and progressive way to get to know your instrument. I also place importance on technique and memorization, again tailoring these to the needs and wishes of the student. My methods have proven very successful and I'm confident your playing will improve quickly!

I teach both children and adults, teenagers and grandparents :-)

Maybe you already play, but would like some help improving your improvisational skills? Or perhaps you are a complete beginner and just want to find out, if this instrument is for you? Get in touch!

Some background to my instruments:

Piano: I initially taught myself the piano and took lessons later on. My main or favourite styles on the piano are: Blues & Boogie Woogie, Traditional Jazz, Rock n' Roll, Pop and Soul. I love many forms of Classical music as well.

Guitar: I taught myself guitar as a kid and play both acoustic and electric. My favourite styles on the guitar are, on the one hand, heavy Rock, Metal and Punk, and on the other gentle Jazz, Blues and ballads :-)

Drums: this became my main gigging instrument between '10 and '20. I mostly focus on funky grooves, hard Rock or Metal, Pop, Jazz, Swing; some rudiments, lots of grooves :-)

About Me

I'm Mike, a Swedish musician born and raised in Zurich, specializing in Piano, Guitar and Drums. I have been playing the piano and the guitar from an early age and started teaching back in 2000. Between 2008 and 2020 I lived in Brighton, UK, where I played in countless Rock, Pop, Jazz and Metal bands, mostly as a drummer. I started teaching drums in 2018.

I completed my IB (Gymnasium) music programme in '98 and my BA diploma in Music from Roehampton University in 2002; however, my strength is as a self-taught musician, learning and teaching by ear - I do not use any notes! - and encouraging the student to hear and feel the music. This is a wonderful and very progressive way to learn, it boosts creativity and helps you apply your skills to all kinds of music. My lessons have proven to be very successful and lots of fun, both for kids and adults, complete beginners or those who wish to further their interpretative skills.

I have been back in Switzerland since 2020 and quickly established my teaching project, "Alternative Piano, Guitar and Drum Lessons" . Aside from that, I run a musical theatre project for children with my partner ("SongCamp"), play as a session pianist and work as a studio producer.

There are few things in life as fun and liberating as playing the drums! This instrument is at once basic and primitive, as well as highly complex - a wonderful exercise for body and mind! The guitar is a fun and social instrument and I believe everybody can learn how to play it! Using two guitars - one for the student and one for the teacher - we will go through some chords, basic finger exercises, strumming techniques and other little tricks. I am confident you will be playing a couple of your favourite songs in no time! We may use the occasional tabliature, but most of the lesson will be focused on listening, playing and repeating; and it will be fun :-) Please note: I specifically do not teach with notations or scores of any sort. As a dedicated and experienced professional teacher with a university degree, I take teaching seriously and am committed to providing effective lessons tailored to each student. I offer different approaches to suit the individual needs and goals of every student. Playing an instrument should be a delightful experience and that's exactly what my lessons are all about! PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN Are you a parent eager to introduce your little one to the wonderful world of music? My lessons are designed to be playful and engaging. Using specially adapted piano books, including a method tailored for children as young as 4 years old, I'll guide your child through an exciting musical adventure, complete with stories, games and new songs to learn. We'll explore music through singing, movement, and rhythm, helping your child develop a deep and lasting love for music. SCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN The lessons are more than just learning songs. Children will explore a piano book filled with stories, characters, engaging music, and games. Depending on preferences we can dive into playing music with accompaniment recordings, which allows children to immerse themselves in a complete musical experience. Theory learning is included. TEENAGERS Are you looking for a piano teacher who will encourage and support your teenager's passion for music? Thanks to a hybrid method book for older beginners that contains pedagogically and age appropriate piano pieces, technical exercises, and supplementary activities, students are able to play hands together from the very first day, unlikely to traditional methods. In case of a former experience in playing the piano, I build on their existing knowledge and continue to expand their skills and creativity. I am also open to student's suggestions, I believe that playing a piece they enjoy is effective in keeping them motivated. ADULTS It's never too late to pick up a new skill. As an adult, you have unique advantages over children when it comes to learning music. You have greater focus, a better grasp of music theory, and a strong motivation to succeed. We'll follow a hybrid method book for older beginners that contains pedagogically appropriate piano pieces, technical exercises, and supplementary activities, and allows you, unlikely to traditional methods, to play hands together from the very first day. Do you have a favorite song that you've always wanted to play but thought it was too difficult? There are plenty of classical and popular melodies that have been arranged for beginners, so you can start playing them right after grasping the basics of piano playing.

Gregor
Flamenco & Blues guitar teacher in Zürich for all ages
I‘m 24 years old man from Slovenia. I‘ve been playing guitar for almost 10 years now, I compose and dive deep into the and art of it. I‘m very interested in teaching and seeing how a person is developing it’s skills once they dedicate themselves to the subject. My approach is very precise and if one desires so, I‘ll teach from total basics as reading the notes and other music theory or we can also work from tabs. I lived in Spain, Granada for some time where I‘ve been to the fountain and the roots of flamenco itself and became more familiar with it. I studied art pedagogy when I was in university in Slovenia, where I learned some pedagogy basics, but I think a teacher has to see beyond the frame and find it‘s own way of passing the knowledge. I speak spanish, english, croation and Slovenian fluently and I speak some basic German and Italian, but I started to work more seriously on both of them. I teach at my home, but offer webcam lessons and also can come to student‘s house but charge additional costs for travel.

Intensive music theory lessons (rhythms in reading and dictation, reading of keys)
Music theory lessons, for children (from 9 years old) and adults. Passionate about music theory and music theory, I would be happy to share with you my enthusiasm for music theory, so unfairly devalued, due to the sometimes brutal methods with which it is taught. In the program : - reading notes (treble clefs, C clefs, F clefs) - reading rhythms (quarter notes, eighth notes, double / triple / quadruple eighth notes, triplets and other dotted notes) - dictation of notes (training your ear takes time, but when the exercises are "tailor-made" and progressive, you progress faster) - dictation of rhythms Do not hesitate to tell me the context of your request (competition preparation, repurposing of instruments, exams, etc.). The course durations offered are deliberately short to encourage maximum concentration. It will be essential to prepare the exercises offered between classes, to progress in a way that gives you satisfaction and nourishes your motivation. Classes available in English as well.
