Hello all, I am Rotem (26), I am guitarist, composer, and music theorist. I am currently a doctoral candidate in the Artistic Research department at the Kunstuniversität Graz and Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) under the supervision of Isabel Mundry and Deniz Peters. I have a master's degree in composition from Zurich University of the Arts, where I studied with Isabel Mundry and Burkhard Kinzler and focused on composition, historical temperaments, and counterpoint. I studied my bachelor’s in jazz guitar performance at the New England Conservatory, where I studied guitar with Joe Morris and composition with Stratis Minakakis (2023). Prior to that, I completed a diploma program at The Center for Jazz Studies in Tel Aviv, in partnership with The New School in New York (2021).

I have been performing, touring and teaching around the world: New York, Washington DC, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, and more!

I have grown up with education both in jazz and classical practices, and therefore am very versatile and fluent with both worlds which i believe creates a unique and interesting perspective for approaching music.

In our lessons, we could focus on anything you'd like to: guitar, music theory, composition, ear training, electronic music, improvisation (jazz and free improvisation), rhythm, and many more.

About Me

Hello all, I am Rotem (26), I am a guitarist and a composer, and currently pursuing my PhD studies in Artistic Research in Graz (KUG). I have recently finished my master's in music composition and theory in ZHdK in Zürich. Previously, I graduated with honors studying jazz performance with classical composition as a side subject from New England Conservatory (Boston).

In our lessons, we could focus on anything you'd like to: guitar, music theory, composition, ear training, electronic music, improvisation (jazz and free improvisation), rhythm, and many more :)

New England Conservatory (Boston) - Bachelor's studies with Stratis Minakakis and Joe Morris, both guitar and composition.

ZHdK - Master's studies in composition with Isabel Mundry, with minor in music theory.

**Both degrees funded with merit-based scholarships.

PhD (ongoing) - Doctoral studies in Artistic Research at the Kunst-Universität Graz.

Experience / Qualifications

I was a teacher assistant at the New England Conservatory in Boston for solfege and music theory, and gave masterclasses in the Janacek Conservatory in Ostrava, Berklee College of Music, and other independent festivals in Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and the US. Furthermore, I have been teaching regularly since 2016 in settings of one to one or group lessons. Amongst the topics which were covered in those lessons are: guitar technique, jazz improvisation, music theory, music history, using effect pedals, composition, rhythmic training, composition, counterpoint, ensemble coaching and more.

I have been performing, touring and teaching in different programs and conservatories around the world: New York, Washington DC, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, and more!

Hello! My name is Matei, I am 21 years old, I have been studying guitar for over a decade and I have 5 years of experience in the teaching domain. I am currently studying jazz at the Jam Music Lab conservatory in Vienna. I have studied classical guitar for 5 years, electric guitar for another 5 years, and jazz guitar for 3 years.

I can teach you music theory concepts ranging from fundamentals like chords, intervals, scales, and arpeggios to the more advanced: circle of fifths, modes, tensions, and triads. Regarding the technical aspect of guitar playing, I can create a good practice routine for the improvement of different styles of playing such as alternate picking, fingerpicking, legato, taping, hybrid picking, economy picking, etc.
Although these concepts may sound frightening at first, I can help you understand them more easily.

The lessons are thought to be suitable for beginners who never picked up a guitar before, intermediate players who know some songs and fundamentals but don't know what to do next, and advanced players who want to deepen their skills.

I can also help you build a good foundation for improvising over any tune you like, help you master composition, and teach you music-making and recording programs such as Reaper, to be able to start your solo projects.

As a composer, I develop my ideas through improvisation at the piano, which, trained through technique and knowledge, allows for a free discovery of one's own music.
So you not only learn to play your favorite songs, but also to understand them and to come up with similar ones yourself.

The lessons are completely flexible, and the focus is on fun and discovery. We can learn to play from sheet music or by ear. We can include harmony, rhythm, and ear training – whatever you prefer.

I offer individually tailored lessons in composition, free improvisation, and piano for students of all levels — from beginners to advanced musicians.

Composition
Lessons focus on developing a personal musical language through both creative work and analytical study. We analyze scores from various periods, including the 20th and 21st centuries. We explore contemporary compositional techniques, form, harmony, texture, and extended instrumental techniques (including their notation). Students are guided in building original works while strengthening their artistic identity.

Free Improvisation
This course combines practical exercises with the analysis of selected works and recordings in experimental and improvised music. The aim is to liberate musical expression while consciously shaping an individual musical language. The course is not dedicated to any single style or genre, but rather focuses on helping each participant discover and develop their own artistic voice and approach to music-making. It is suitable not only for beginners, but also for advanced musicians seeking to expand their vocabulary and deepen their artistic practice.
There is no restriction to a single instrument: participants are welcome to bring their own instrument or join without any instrument at all.
Lessons can take place both individually and in small groups.
This format is also highly suitable for children, as improvisation encourages imagination, confidence, and a playful exploration of sound.

Piano
Piano lessons integrate technique, sound awareness, and interpretative work. Repertoire may include classical, contemporary, or experimental music, depending on the student’s interests and goals.
We work either with a programme assigned by a university or institution, or develop an individual programme tailored to the student’s artistic interests, technical level, and personal objectives.

My experience with guitar started with classical guitar when I was 6 years old and moving on to playing electric guitar at age 14.
Being immersed in playing primarily blues and jazz music.

I have taught students who not only do music as a hobby, but also students with serious career plans in music. I am open to various styles of playing guitar (jazz, blues, fingerstyle, funk, free improvisation and other popular genres) to all levels.

My approach is heavily focused on individual student's goals and needs: If you are just starting to play the instrument, for instance, we will focus on learning the basic technique through simple and easy songs.
If you are intermediate or advanced player already, we will focus on refining your already existing knowledge and find improvements to work on. Or, we can focus on specific themes, for instance improvisation, transcribing, technique and so on.

I also enjoy music theory very much and as I too struggled with grasping the concept when I was younger I am now more than happy to be able to present the world of music theory to anyone who is interested.
