Banjo Clawhammer / Two Fingers (5 strings). Concrete method without music theory accessible to all!
From 83.28 C$ /h
Clawhammer is a traditional American banjo technique rooted in the old-time music of the Appalachian Mountains. While closely tied to this repertoire, it also lends itself beautifully to contemporary styles such as folk, country, and even pop. This style of playing is ideal for accompanying vocals or performing melodies enriched with rhythmic drive, drones, and chordal textures.
No prior musical knowledge is required. The learning process is based on listening, watching, and imitating, without the use of written notation or tablature. This oral approach helps develop musical memory, independence, and the ability to quickly recall and play tunes—whether on your own or during jam sessions.
The course focuses on learning songs and instrumental tunes from the old-time repertoire. Some pieces may be offered in simplified versions for beginners. More advanced players will have the opportunity to explore complex techniques such as drop thumb, alternate string pull-off, Galax lick, and rhythmic variations that go beyond the classic bum-ditty pattern. The main goal is to provide you with the musical and technical foundation you need to continue learning on your own.
Depending on interest, the course may also include an introduction to the Two-Finger style (thumb lead, index lead, mix lead). This technique, somewhat similar to up-picking or bluegrass banjo, offers an interesting alternative for playing old-time melodies.
Important: A 5-string banjo (with a short fifth string, or drone string) is required. This repertoire and these techniques cannot be played on a 4- or 6-string banjo.

About Me
I like to share my passion for the banjo and the old-time music that made it known. I am also involved in the development of events, jams and festivals that make this tradition better known here in Brussels. My teaching is based on traditional techniques to help you better develop your own use of the instrument by understanding what distinguishes it from another stringed instrument.
Education
Holder of a teaching diploma (HEFF), I am mainly guided by my numerous experiences in the US traditional music sector (known as Old-Time). I had the opportunity to give several banjo workshops in Europe (Italy, Netherlands, France, etc.) and to develop my practice with many custodians of the tradition in the United States (Cliffop, Galax Fiddle Convention , ...).
Experience / Qualifications
I play banjo in the old-time music project called "Hills of Belgium" (recently programmed at La Roche Bluegrass Festival (FR), Rotterdam Bluegrass Festival (NL), Back to the Farm (I), Gainsborough (UK), ...)
